Match Report

What a difference a week makes! After the previous week’s fine victory over Maidenhead and Bray, everything seemed to be going perfectly when, after being put into the field, Abbas forced the Boyne Hill skipper to nick the first ball of the game to second slip, where returning skipper Gary Phillips pocketed a simple catch. Things continued to look rosy as Aussie all-rounder LJ Brown joined Abbas in taking a couple of wickets, reducing Boyne Hill to 40-4.

Unfortunately the pressure seemed to be taken off the batsmen when these 2 bowlers came off and although the run rate was kept low, they gradually developed a good partnership, with the help of some slack fielding. With some close umpiring calls going for them, and some good late hitting, Boyne Hill finished on 204-8 with Brown being the star of the show taking 5 for 45.

This total should have been well within Sonning’s reach, but the innings started disastrously. Brown, who had batted so well the week before attempted a very ambitious pull shot to the first ball of the innings and was caught at mid-off. Richard Anderson was soon after adjudged LBW to a ball that would have done well to hit another set of stumps, and then Scott Stevens played an awful shot to get out to his first ball. Vice Captain JJ Harris joined classy Ian Boyton at the crease, and they gradually started building a good partnership, but it was tough going and Harris especially was struggling to hit the ball on the ground. In the end this told, as a good catch dismissed him for 23. This was the beginning of the end for Sonning, as they tamely subsided to 113 all out with only Boyton, who scored a good 42, Harris and Duncan Parr (26 not out) reaching double figures.

This was a sub standard performance from Sonning. The batting was poor in what were testing conditions, the back up bowling released the pressure built up on the batsmen and the fielding was average at best. The whole team need to raise their standards, or they will find themselves in the relegation fight.
