Sonning Women Secure Victory at Cookham Dean in Pairs Format

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a well-deserved win away to Cookham Dean in the Super 8 Development Group 1 on 2nd June, with captain Sharon Fleming's side producing a disciplined all-round display in the pairs format encounter.

Having won the toss and elected to field, Sonning were tasked with containing Cookham Dean's batting lineup across 16 overs. The hosts posted 79 for 5, with contributions spread across the card. Jesal Kulhar top-scored for Cookham Dean with 13 off 13 balls, while Emma Petersen and Freya Hayden each added 8 to the total. A sizeable extras tally of 27 — including 16 wides and 8 no-balls — bolstered the home side's score considerably.

Sophie Parker was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, claiming 2 wickets from her 3 overs, though she conceded 17 runs and was a touch wayward with 7 wides and 4 no-balls. Chloe Bailey provided useful support at the other end, taking 1 for 12 from her 3 overs with more controlled figures. Rita Green was arguably the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, conceding just 9 runs from her 3 overs without a wide or no-ball to her name.

In reply, Sonning reached 73 for 1 from their 16 overs. Opening pair Sophie Parker (5 off 14) and Elinor Longridge (4 off 10) provided a steady start before giving way to the middle order. Captain Fleming anchored the innings with a patient 9 off 20 balls, including a boundary, but it was the lower-order contributions that truly drove Sonning's chase.

Rita Green struck a brisk 15 off 14 deliveries, finding the boundary twice, while Chloe Bailey matched her score of 15 from 15 balls, dispatching three fours in an assured knock. Wicketkeeper Siobhan Davis chipped in with a handy 7 off 9 balls, including a four, to ensure Sonning's total remained competitive throughout.

The pairs format, which started both sides on 200 runs with a 5-run penalty for each dismissal, proved crucial in the outcome. While Cookham Dean lost 5 wickets during their innings — resulting in a 25-run deduction — Sonning's batters were far more disciplined, losing just a single wicket through Amberley Taylor's dismissal. This 20-run differential in penalties was decisive, as Cookham Dean's higher raw run tally of 79 could not offset the additional wickets lost.

Sonning's victory earned them 6 league points to Cookham Dean's 1, a reward for a performance built on bowling discipline in the first innings and sensible batting in the second. The all-round contributions of Chloe Bailey and Rita Green, both effective with bat and ball, were particularly noteworthy in securing the result.
