Andrews' Five-Wicket Haul Not Enough as Scorchers Fall Short at The Oratory School

Sonning U13 Scorchers suffered a 26-run defeat to Goring in the BYCL Under 13 Blast North West league fixture at The Oratory School on 7th July, despite a sensational five-wicket haul from Finley Andrews that threatened to turn the match on its head.

Having won the toss and elected to field, captain Namit Desai watched as Goring's top order built a formidable platform. Samuel James anchored the innings superbly with an unbeaten 38 from just 22 deliveries, striking eight fours in a display of confident stroke-play throughout. Arthur Good contributed a composed 27 from 25 balls before retiring not out, while Dexter Rhind added a fluent 30 from 23 balls, also retiring to give his teammates a chance to bat. A 75-run second-wicket partnership between Henry Bowers and Good provided the backbone of the innings, with Bowers himself smashing 15 from just eight balls, including three boundaries.

The Scorchers' early bowling proved expensive, with Izaan Baloch (0-29 from two overs), Desai (0-28 from three), and Frederick Parkes (0-20 from two) all going at high rates. Saurav Sivaram provided the first breakthrough, bowling Joseph Dineen for 6, while Daniel Moseley chipped in with the wicket of Bowers for his figures of 1-12.

Andrews then produced a remarkable spell that very nearly wrestled back the initiative. Returning to the attack late in the innings, he ripped through Goring's lower order with devastating effect, claiming 5-5 from his three overs. He trapped Fenwick Partridge-Brown lbw for 5, before bowling Tommy Drage for a golden duck and Charlie Teasdale without scoring in quick succession — three wickets falling at 113 without a run being added. He then removed Harry Woolfall and Leo Moffet to complete a superb five-for, though the damage had already been done as Goring posted 157 for 7.

The Scorchers' reply got off to a shaky start, slipping to 14 for 2 as Sivaram fell lbw to Dineen for 4 and Andrews was bowled by Partridge-Brown for 6. Charlie Bright counter-attacked briskly, cracking two fours in his 13 from 10 balls before being run out by Woolfall, and when Tejus Maddi (8) and Parkes (1) both fell to Woolfall's bowling, the Scorchers were in trouble at 53 for 5.

Henry Verrier Jones and Izaan Baloch then produced the partnership of the match, putting on 77 for the sixth wicket in a stand that gave the Scorchers genuine hope. Verrier Jones batted with real authority, striking four fours in his 28 from 25 balls before retiring not out, while Baloch played the ideal supporting role with a measured 16 from 22 deliveries. Desai had earlier anchored proceedings with a patient 17 from 25 balls before retiring.

The late surge ultimately fell short. Oliver Barker hit a quickfire 7 from five balls before being bowled by Samuel James, and when Daniel Moseley was stumped by Henry Bowers off James for a duck in the same over, the Scorchers' challenge petered out at 131 for 7. The 30 extras conceded by Goring — including 15 wides and eight no-balls — kept the scoreboard ticking, but the required rate always remained beyond reach. Andrews' magnificent bowling figures will live long in the memory, though Goring's batting depth ultimately proved the difference on the night.
