Sharks Fall Short as Murugaraj's Battling Knock Goes in Vain at Knowl Hill

Sonning U15 Sharks suffered a defeat at the hands of East Woodhay in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge at Knowl Hill on 26th May, posting 105 for 6 from their 20 overs before the visitors chased down the target with considerable ease, reaching 110 for 2 in just 14.2 overs.

Captain Yusuf Malik won the toss and opted to bat, but the Sharks found themselves in immediate trouble. Opener Idris Malik departed without scoring in the fourth ball of the innings, caught by Joshua Ashworth off the impressive Hector Crosthwaite. Siddharth Kumar, promoted to number three, managed just 6 from 8 balls before falling bowled to Crosthwaite, who finished a superb spell with figures of 3-1-3-2 including a maiden over. At 8 for 2, the Sharks were in deep difficulty.

What followed was the pivotal partnership of the Sonning innings. Malik and Santhosh Murugaraj combined to add 72 for the third wicket, steadily rebuilding and taking the score to 80 before Malik was stumped by Arthur Savage off Zamir Shariff's spin for 19 from 41 balls. It was a measured innings from the skipper, but the strike rate of just over 46 reflected the pressure applied by the East Woodhay bowling attack.

Murugaraj was the standout performer with the bat for the Sharks, carrying his bat through to finish unbeaten on 36 from 42 deliveries, striking five fours in an innings of genuine quality. Arya Maheshwaran provided useful support with 12 from 14 balls, but the middle order crumbled around Murugaraj. Shriyans Iyengar was bowled for a duck by Teddy Dalrymple, and Yuvraj Singh Kaur followed immediately, caught by Crosthwaite off Dalrymple for nought, leaving the Sharks 86 for 5. Eshan Wang-Kumar struck a late boundary from his only delivery faced, but 105 always looked below par on a decent batting surface.

East Woodhay's reply was built around a commanding innings from Harrison Boyle, who retired not out on 32 from 27 balls, an innings laced with three fours and a six. After Ashworth fell for 4, bowled by Maheshwaran with the score on 20, Boyle and Shariff put on 58 for the second wicket to effectively settle the contest. Shariff contributed a well-made 21 from 25 balls with three boundaries before he was caught by Sibikumar Muthukumaran off the bowling of Krishna Manikandan.

The Sharks' bowling discipline let them down significantly. Extras accounted for 28 of the opposition's runs, with 22 wides proving particularly costly. Shriyans Iyengar conceded 10 wides in a single over, while Sibikumar Muthukumaran sent down 6 wides in his solitary over. With only two wickets to show from ten different bowlers used, the Sharks simply could not build sustained pressure.

Crosthwaite, already the pick of the bowlers in the first innings, then hammered an unbeaten 20 from just 6 balls, smashing three fours and a six to put the finishing touches on a comprehensive East Woodhay victory. Alongside the unbeaten Max Foster, who contributed a steady 5, Crosthwaite ensured the visitors cruised home with nearly six overs to spare. It was a chastening evening for the Sharks, for whom Murugaraj's defiant knock and Maheshwaran's wicket were the few bright spots in an otherwise difficult outing.
