Match Report

Rita Green's Magnificent 91 Not Out Steers Sonning Women to Comprehensive Victory

Sonning Women's 1st XI secured a convincing win over Maidenhead & Bray at King George's Field on Sunday, powered by a superb unbeaten 91 from opener Rita Green that formed the backbone of a commanding 67-run victory in this Division 3 A encounter.

After Maidenhead & Bray captain Michelle Jeyarajah won the toss and elected to field, Sonning's innings got off to a cautious start. Elinor Longridge managed just 2 from 14 balls before falling bowled to Riya Srinivas with the score on 19. What followed, however, was a match-defining partnership. Green and Geethika Jyothis combined for a magnificent second-wicket stand of 106 runs, putting the visitors' attack to the sword and transforming the complexion of the innings entirely.

Green was the dominant force throughout, striking ten boundaries in her 82-ball knock, timing the ball cleanly and finding gaps with impressive regularity. Jyothis played an excellent supporting role, contributing 33 from 41 deliveries with five fours of her own before being bowled by Alex Mistry with the total on 125. The Maidenhead & Bray bowling attack struggled for consistency, conceding 38 extras across the innings — including 22 wides and 14 no-balls — which further bolstered Sonning's total.

A brief wobble saw Sonning slip from 125 for 2 to 130 for 4 as Sophie Parker (1) fell to Shirley Emmanuel and Rebecca Malhi was bowled by Srinivas for a duck. Green, however, remained immovable at the crease, and alongside Hannah Brooks, who batted patiently for 1 not out from 20 balls, guided Sonning to an imposing 166 for 4 from their 25 overs.

Maidenhead & Bray's reply started positively, with openers Emily Bradshaw and Farah Ahmed putting on 30 for the first wicket. The introduction of Jyothis proved devastating, however, as she had Ahmed caught — taking the catch herself — off her own bowling. In the same over, she bowled captain Jeyarajah for a golden duck, and Bradshaw fell to Frances Howson moments later, leaving the visitors reeling at 30 for 3.

Jyothis was outstanding with the ball, returning figures of 3 for 7 from her three overs with a maiden, while captain Katie Barrows matched her with 3 for 10 from three overs, including the crucial wicket of Emma Skinner, caught by Green. Shirley Emmanuel offered brief resistance with 4 before Jyothis bowled her, and at 51 for 5 the chase was effectively over.

Riya Srinivas provided the only real resistance in the Maidenhead & Bray lower order, top-scoring with 20 from 37 balls and sharing a 24-run partnership with Aleeza Mehmood for the sixth wicket. Belle Myers broke through to dismiss both Mehmood and Reva Nadgouda, finishing with 2 for 20, before Barrows cleaned up the tail. A sharp run out by wicketkeeper Sarah Wonham to dismiss Rubika Latif brought the innings to a close at 99 all out in just 19 overs, with 48 extras — including 31 wides — inflating the total somewhat.

Jyothis's outstanding all-round contribution of 33 with the bat and 3 for 7 with the ball complemented Green's dominant batting display, as Sonning collected a maximum 25 league points from a thoroughly professional performance at home.
