Match Report

Jayan's Sublime 76 Not Out Steers Sonning to Commanding Eight-Wicket Victory

Sonning 4th XI produced a clinical run chase at Waingels College on Saturday, overhauling Henley's total of 162 with eight wickets in hand and more than 18 overs to spare in this Division 10B encounter.

Captain Kabir Dave won the toss and chose to field, a decision that was vindicated by a disciplined bowling display despite a strong start from the visitors. Henley openers Freddie Bowlby (14) and George Piercy put on 59 for the first wicket, with Piercy looking particularly fluent. Toby Fitton made the breakthrough, having Bowlby caught by Edward McLoughlin for 14 off 33 balls.

Piercy continued to dominate, adding a further 54 with Ramiah Palvannan for the second wicket. Palvannan struck five boundaries in a brisk 27 from 30 deliveries before Dave had him bowled. It was the captain's intervention that truly turned the innings, as Dave then removed Piercy for an excellent 60 — an innings featuring eight fours and two sixes — caught by Isaac Jenner. Piercy's dismissal at 116 for three triggered a dramatic collapse from which Henley never recovered.

From the comfort of 113 for one, Henley lost their remaining nine wickets for just 49 runs. Dave finished with outstanding figures of 3-24 from his eight overs, including two maidens, while Christopher Dowse claimed 2-33 from his full allocation of eight overs, removing Joseph Raymond (caught Sagar Dave) and Richard Piercy (stumped Sophie Smith). Philemon Pon was sharp in the field, running out both Rocco Rotheram and Aakansh Naik, while wicketkeeper Smith completed two stumpings to cap an excellent collective effort.

The reply began positively as Aveer Sidhu and Gaurav Jayan put on 41 for the opening stand before Sidhu fell bowled by Joseph Raymond for 19. Sophie Smith was dismissed shortly after for 3, leaving Sonning at 56 for two. It proved to be the last moment of joy for the Henley attack.

Jayan and McLoughlin then took the game away from the visitors in emphatic fashion. Jayan was the dominant force, timing the ball beautifully as he peppered the boundary with 11 fours in an unbeaten 76 from just 65 deliveries. McLoughlin provided excellent support at the other end, striking two fours and two sixes in a punchy unbeaten 43 off 38 balls. Their unbroken third-wicket partnership of 107 rendered the Henley bowling increasingly ragged, with 22 extras conceded including 17 wides as the visitors' discipline deteriorated.

Sonning reached their target of 163 in just 21.5 overs, a comprehensive victory that earned them 22 league points. The six bowlers used by Kabir Dave all contributed to restricting Henley, and the batting unit's ability to chase down the target with such authority and wickets in hand underlined the quality of this all-round team performance.
