Stingers Stung as Maidenhead & Bray Overpower Sonning's Batting Lineup
Sonning U11 Stingers suffered a comprehensive defeat at King George's Field on Tuesday evening as Maidenhead & Bray chased down their modest total with considerable ease in this Girls U11 Challenge fixture.
Having lost the toss and been inserted to bat, the Stingers found themselves in immediate difficulty against a disciplined Maidenhead & Bray bowling attack. Georgia Welch struck twice in her opening two-over spell while conceding just a single run off the bat, and Florence Alden departed without scoring to leave Sonning on the back foot from the very first over. The pressure was relentless as Maisie Holmes and Izzy Ratcliffe kept things tight through the middle overs, with Ratcliffe delivering a particularly miserly spell of two maiden overs without conceding a run.
Eleanor Hatchett-Walker provided the only real resistance with the bat for Sonning, top-scoring with six runs in what was otherwise a frustrating innings for the home side. Megan Symes and Mia Ho each contributed three, while captain Chloe Dawes was dismissed twice in quick succession as the score stalled at 10 for 4. Jessica Bowley proved the most destructive of the visiting bowlers, claiming three wickets from her two overs, while the Stingers' total of 44 owed much to 31 extras — including 19 wides — rather than any sustained batting effort.
Maidenhead & Bray's reply began shakily enough, with Aarohi Tyagi producing a superb opening spell for the Stingers. Tyagi bowled with excellent control, taking three wickets while conceding just two runs from her two overs, and at 12 for 4 the visitors found themselves under genuine pressure.
However, the lower order turned the match decisively in Maidenhead & Bray's favour. Katy Tudor-Morgan was the standout performer with an excellent 14 runs, while Georgia Welch added a valuable 12 to complement her earlier bowling heroics. Together they transformed the chase, adding crucial runs in the closing overs as the Sonning attack began to lose its earlier discipline.
Isabella Partridge was another bright spot with the ball for the Stingers, picking up three wickets from her two overs, but the visitors' total of 82 — boosted by 32 extras including 15 wides and 15 no-balls — was always well beyond Sonning's reach. Nabiha Bahadur's nine at the top of the order and Izzy Ratcliffe's six had also laid useful foundations before the lower-order onslaught.
The final margin told the story of a match in which the Stingers were outperformed with the bat but showed encouraging signs with the ball, particularly through Tyagi's outstanding early spell. With only 13 runs scored off the bat across their entire innings, Sonning's batters will know that significant improvement is needed at this level of competition.
