Match Report
Murphy's Commanding 36 Anchors Scorchers to Hard-Fought Victory Over Henley
Sonning U15 Scorchers secured a valuable win in the U15 Performance League Pool 4, defending a modest total of 98 to bowl Henley out for 90 at Waingels College on Monday evening. Captain Max Murphy led from the front with both bat and ball, proving the difference in a contest that swung firmly in the Scorchers' favour during a devastating middle-overs spell with the ball.
Having won the toss and elected to bat, the Scorchers made a purposeful start through Harrison Lott, who struck 15 from 16 balls at the top of the order. Lott and Aveer Sidhu put on 22 for the opening wicket before Lott was caught by Jethro Kock off the bowling of Henley captain Taimoor-Ali Baig. Sidhu followed shortly after for 7, bowled by Joseph Raymond, and the hosts found themselves 26 for 2.
Murphy then took control of the innings with a mature knock that formed the backbone of the Scorchers' total. The skipper shared a crucial third-wicket partnership of 38 with Kavya Panchal, who contributed a steady 15 from 25 balls before being stumped by George Piercy off Laurie Tate. Murphy continued to find the boundary with impressive regularity, striking seven fours during his 42-ball stay at the crease. Kanishka Suriarachchi provided further support with 11 from 17 deliveries, adding 29 alongside his captain for the fourth wicket before being stumped, also off Atharv Gupta's bowling. Murphy was eventually bowled by Gupta for 36, and a late flurry of wickets saw the Scorchers lose three for just five runs to close on 98 for 7. Raymond was the pick of Henley's attack, returning figures of 2-14 from four overs including a maiden, while Gupta claimed 2-18.
Henley's reply started strongly, with openers Rowan Garfath-Nebbett and Gupta constructing an assured stand of 41 for the first wicket that put the visitors firmly on course. Garfath-Nebbett made 12 before being bowled by Ollie Terry, but Gupta continued to accumulate fluently. When Piercy arrived at the crease, he immediately seized the initiative with an explosive 15 from just 10 balls, smashing three fours to lift Henley to 60 for 1 and threatening to take the game away from the Scorchers.
The turning point arrived with devastating suddenness. Ethan Towner had Piercy caught by Arthur Parkes, and when Gupta was run out by Harrison Lott for 24, Henley stumbled from 60 for 1 to 63 for 3. What followed was a remarkable collapse. Murphy, switching seamlessly from bat to ball, bowled Kock for a golden duck and then removed Surplice for 1, while Towner clean bowled Jackson Bate without scoring. In the space of just ten runs, Henley had lost four wickets and slumped to 73 for 7.
Towner's spell was particularly impressive, finishing with outstanding figures of 3-12 from his four overs to dismantle the Henley middle order. Jack Durrant chipped in with 2-19, including the wicket of Henley captain Baig, caught by Sidhu for a duck, and later bowling Raymond for 1. Murphy's 2-14 from four tidy overs completed a fine all-round display. Aveer Sidhu was prominent in the field, taking two catches to support the bowlers' efforts.
Aakansh Naik offered some late resistance for Henley with an unbeaten 11, but there was insufficient support at the other end. The last wicket fell when Tate was run out by Parkes without facing a ball, Henley bowled out for 90 in 19.2 overs — eight runs short of their target. The Scorchers picked up five league points to Henley's two, a reward thoroughly deserved for a disciplined bowling and fielding performance that turned a competitive match firmly in their favour.
