Stingers Fall Short as Wokingham Prove Too Strong at King George's Field
Sonning U11 Stingers suffered defeat at home to Wokingham in their Girls U11 Super 6s North league fixture on 18th June, posting 31 for 1 before the visitors chased down the target comfortably, reaching 54 for 1 from their nine overs.
Wokingham won the toss and inserted Sonning to bat first on a sunny morning at King George's Field. Opening batter Jessica Hawkins provided the backbone of the Stingers' innings, striking three fours on her way to a team-high 13 runs. She looked confident from the outset and was the only Sonning batter to find the boundary with any regularity.
Captain Megan Symes offered support at number two, contributing four runs including a four of her own, while Aarohi Tyagi added a single at three. The middle and lower order found runs hard to come by, with Isabella Partridge, Ruby Cross and Charlotte Hickman all failing to trouble the scorers. Wokingham's Hannah Murphy produced the standout bowling performance, delivering two overs that included a maiden and yielded the only wicket of the innings while conceding no runs off the bat. Cross was the batter to fall, dismissed with the score on 18. Extras played a significant role in the Sonning total, contributing 13 runs — 12 of which came from wides.
Needing just 32 for victory, Wokingham's batting lineup showed considerably more fluency. Hannah Murphy led the way at the top of the order with nine runs, including a boundary, and opener Iiania chipped in with two. Jasmine kept the scoreboard ticking at three with six runs before Milly matched Murphy's tally of nine, finding the rope twice during a confident knock at number four.
Captain Anabelle was the top scorer for the visitors with an assured 14 that included a four, although she did fall to Symes — the lone wicket for the Stingers. Iris closed the innings with four runs as Wokingham passed the Sonning total with plenty to spare.
With the ball, Symes was comfortably the pick of the Sonning attack, her two economical overs yielding just five runs and the crucial scalp of Anabelle. Ruby Cross also bowled tidily, conceding only three runs from her single over. Elsewhere, Jessica Hawkins and Aarohi Tyagi each went for 12 from their two-over spells as Wokingham's batters found gaps with increasing confidence.
The 23-run margin of defeat reflected the difference between the two sides on the day, with Wokingham's batters sharing the scoring load far more effectively across their lineup. For the Stingers, Hawkins' batting and Symes' bowling were bright spots in an otherwise challenging afternoon.
