Sonning 4th XI Fall Short Despite Towner's Resilient Knock

Sonning 4th XI suffered a four-wicket defeat against Theale and Tilehurst in their Division 10A fixture at home on Saturday. After posting 167-9 from their allotted 40 overs, Sonning couldn't prevent the visitors from reaching their target with five overs to spare.

Having been put in to bat after losing the toss, Sonning struggled early as opener David McLoughlin was bowled by Chirag Patel for just 3, while Arun Raghavendra managed only 5 before being caught. Captain Syed Naqi steadied the innings with a determined 29, but his dismissal, caught off the bowling of Daniel Davidson-Soler, left Sonning in a precarious position.

Paul Towner emerged as Sonning's top scorer, crafting a solid 36 before falling leg before wicket to Davidson-Soler. The middle order provided valuable contributions with Rahul Sood (23), Warick Winter (24), and wicketkeeper Joshua Jones (23) all reaching the twenties, but none could convert to a match-defining score.

For the visitors, Ritesh Kini was the standout bowler, claiming 3-36 from his eight overs. He was well supported by Chirag Patel (2-28) and Daniel Davidson-Soler (2-35), whose disciplined bowling kept Sonning in check throughout their innings.

In reply, Theale and Tilehurst lost an early wicket when William Travers removed Phil Mead for 6, but Kevin Townsend anchored the chase with a composed 44, including five boundaries. Sankalp Kumar provided able support with 29, before Srikanthvarman Vallabhaneni dismissed both batsmen to give Sonning hope.

Captain Syed Naqi led from the front with the ball, taking 3-23 from his five overs, including the scalps of Thomas Parkhill, Russel Davidson-Soler, and Paul Robinson. Vallabhaneni's 2-33 complemented Naqi's efforts, but an unbroken partnership between Ritesh Kini (26 not out with five boundaries) and Iesa Saddiq (16 not out) saw the visitors home comfortably.

Theale and Tilehurst's chase was aided by a generous 35 extras, including 21 wides, which ultimately proved costly for Sonning. Despite the defeat, Sonning did earn seven bonus points for their batting and bowling performances, while Theale and Tilehurst claimed 22 points for their win in this Thames Valley Cricket League encounter.
