Stingers Fall Short as Peppard Stoke Row Chase Down Target at King George's Field

Sonning U11 Stingers suffered defeat at home on Sunday as Peppard Stoke Row chased down a modest target of 40 with considerable room to spare, posting 53 for 1 from their nine overs in this Girls U11 Super 6s North league fixture at King George's Field.

Peppard Stoke Row captain Florence Moorcroft won the toss and chose to field, a decision that proved astute as her opening spell of two overs yielded no runs off the bat while conceding just two wides, including a maiden over. That early discipline with the ball put the Stingers on the back foot from the outset, and the loss of Eleanor Hatchett-Walker with the score still on nought compounded a difficult start for the home side.

Captain Jessica Hawkins provided the backbone of the Sonning innings, top-scoring with 14 runs including two boundaries. Florence Alden contributed nine runs at the top of the order, also finding the fence twice, but support from the rest of the batting line-up was limited. Ruby Cross added two, while Mia Ho and Chloe Dawes were both unable to trouble the scorers. The Stingers' total of 39 for 1 from nine overs, which included 13 extras, always looked as though it might be below par.

Peppard Stoke Row's reply was measured and clinical. Openers Amelia Watts and Florence Moorcroft set the platform with scores of 11 and 10 respectively, the latter striking a boundary as the visitors moved through the early overs with purpose. Grace Jones chipped in with eight useful runs from the middle order.

The decisive contribution came from Isabel Blagg, whose sparkling 16 — the highest individual score of the match — featured three fours and powered Peppard Stoke Row well past the target. Blagg was eventually dismissed by Mia Ho, ending a productive fifth-wicket partnership of 31 with Annabel Bee, but by then the damage had been well and truly done.

With the ball, Eleanor Hatchett-Walker claimed the sole wicket for the Stingers, while Ruby Cross was impressively economical, conceding just a single run from her over. Mia Ho bowled tidily in her two overs for figures of 2-0-8-1. However, 15 runs from Chloe Dawes's two overs proved costly as Peppard Stoke Row reached their target with plenty in hand.

The Stingers will need to find greater consistency across their batting order if they are to convert home advantage into results in this competition. Hawkins led from the front with bat in hand, but the visitors' superior depth with the bat ultimately told the story of the afternoon.
