Match Report

Goodman's Magnificent Seven Not Enough as Sonning Fall Short in Low-Scoring Affair

Sonning 1st XI suffered a frustrating defeat at King George's Field on Saturday, bowled out for 80 in pursuit of just 94 as Beaconsfield claimed victory in this Division 1B encounter despite being dismissed for a modest 93 themselves.

Beaconsfield won the toss and elected to bat, but quickly found themselves under siege from a rampant Damario Goodman. The seamer delivered a career-defining spell, returning extraordinary figures of 7-20 from 9.3 overs as the visitors crumbled from a position of relative comfort. Openers Montgomery Evans (25 off 33 balls, including four boundaries) and Jago Catherwood (22 off 47 balls) had given Beaconsfield a solid platform with a first-wicket stand of 38, but Goodman's intervention turned the innings on its head. Once Evans fell lbw, wickets tumbled at regular intervals as the middle order offered scant resistance — Sanjoy Bassi was bowled for a duck, captain James Kenny managed only 3 from 21 deliveries, and Tegh Banse contributed just 2.

At the other end, captain Peter Higginbottom complemented Goodman superbly with 3-25 from his nine overs, bowling Harry Taylor and Mattias Gianneri before having Toby Slater caught by Mohammed Zahid. Beaconsfield lost their last seven wickets for just 55 runs, collapsing from 38-0 to 93 all out in 28.3 overs. Mohammed Zahid deserves particular credit for his miserly opening spell of 5-3-6-0, which built early pressure even before Goodman wreaked havoc.

Chasing what appeared a straightforward target, Sonning's reply got off to the worst possible start. Muhammad Ayub was trapped lbw by Scott Jackson for a duck with the score on just 1, and when Dhruv Peshkar fell lbw to Harry Taylor for 2 at 13-2, anxiety was already creeping in. Amaad Ali followed cheaply, caught behind by Alex Lloyd Taylor off Jackson, leaving Sonning reeling at 17-3.

Mohammed Zahid, having already impressed with the ball, briefly steadied the ship with a counter-attacking 24 off 30 balls. His knock, which included two fours and a six, formed the backbone of a crucial 30-run fourth-wicket partnership with Sid Anilkumar. At 47-3, Sonning still appeared favourites, needing fewer than 50 more with seven wickets in hand. However, Zahid's dismissal — caught by Gianneri off the bowling of Toby Slater — proved the decisive moment of the match.

Slater, who had earlier been dismissed for just 3 with the bat, emerged as Beaconsfield's match-winner with the ball. The all-rounder claimed 5-30 from 7.3 overs, ripping through the Sonning lower order with relentless accuracy. After Zahid's departure, the home side lost their remaining six wickets for just 33 runs. Two run-outs — David Coutts dismissed by a sharp piece of fielding from James Kenny, and Anilkumar run out by Montgomery Evans — compounded Sonning's misery, as the required rate spiralled and composure deserted the batting line-up. Higginbottom fell lbw for 4, and Slater then cleaned up Danyal Ghazi (9), Goodman (5), and Ghulam Abbas (0) in quick succession to seal the win.

Sonning were ultimately bowled out for 80 in 23.3 overs, falling 13 runs short of their target. The generous 22 extras conceded by the Beaconsfield attack — including 17 wides — offered lifelines that the home batsmen were unable to capitalise on. It was a bitterly disappointing outcome for Sonning, whose outstanding bowling performance in the first innings deserved far better reward from their top order.
