Baloch's Battling 39 Not Enough as U13 Sharks Fall to Henley at Shiplake

Sonning U13 Sharks suffered defeat at Shiplake College as Henley's Under 13 Wildcats chased down a target of 110 with five overs to spare and eight wickets in hand in this BYCL Under 13 Challenge fixture on 26 July.

Invited to bat first after Henley captain Toby Wood won the toss and opted to field, the Sharks found themselves in early difficulty. Opener Jude Alden departed for just 1 off two balls, bowled by Oscar Keeling, before Oscar Tann fell in similar fashion to Wood for 1, leaving Sonning wobbling at 15 for 2. Wicketkeeper Anay Patel offered some resistance alongside skipper Izaan Baloch but was caught by Wood off the bowling of Arjun Nangpal for 4, and when Divik Gupta was run out by Keeling without scoring, the Sharks had slumped to 34 for 4.

Baloch was the anchor throughout the early turmoil, compiling a composed innings of 39 from 40 deliveries that included two boundaries. The captain held the innings together while wickets tumbled at the other end, but his departure at 35 for 5 — bowled by Gabriel Surplice — left Sonning in a precarious position with significant work still to do.

The lower order mounted a spirited recovery. Yuvaansh Sharma and Abhinav Surisetty were central to a crucial sixth-wicket partnership worth 69 runs that transformed the innings. Sharma contributed 12 from 33 balls, while Surisetty struck an unbeaten 7 from 16 deliveries including a boundary. A generous helping of extras — 43 in total, comprising 31 wides and 10 no-balls from the Henley attack — proved invaluable in pushing the Sharks to 109 for 6 from their 20 overs.

Henley's reply was clinical from the outset. Owen Ashton and Surplice put on 52 for the opening wicket, setting a commanding platform. Ashton was particularly impressive, striking 31 from 34 balls with three fours before retiring not out. Gupta provided the Sharks with a breakthrough when he bowled Surplice for 16, but the damage had already been done.

Harry Simpson continued the momentum with 14 from 18 balls in a second-wicket stand of 33 with Oliver Harding before being run out at 85 for 2. Any hopes of a Sonning fightback were swiftly extinguished by captain Wood, who smashed an unbeaten 20 from just nine deliveries, including three fours, to see Henley home to 110 for 2 in only 15 overs.

The Sharks' bowling lacked the penetration needed to defend a modest total. Gupta's figures of 1 for 20 from three overs were the pick of the attack, while Baloch bowled tidily without reward, conceding 15 from his three overs. Jude Alden was economical with 11 from two overs, but the Sharks could not generate enough pressure to trouble the Henley batting line-up, which reached its target with considerable comfort.
