Match Report

A hot sunny afternoon was a nice backdrop to a top of the table clash between 2nd placed Sonning and 3rd placed Burnham. Our illustrious leader Captain Khan won the toss on home soil and after consultation with V.C. Ted Baker decided it was best to put the oppo in to see what they could muster on Sonnings’ wicket.

First Blood went to Sonning with Dave “Rentboy Rintoul striking early to put Burnham on the back foot for 11-1. However Burnham fought back and it was not until some clever bowling by in-form Waqas Tahir that Sonning got their next wicket by looping a slower ball through the gusty breeze for the batsman to knock in the air for “did you hear about my catches Beefy to take his second catch of the match.

Burnham then struggled to put runs on the board with Waqas putting in a bowling performance that nearly won him man of the match with getting a further 4 wickets to give him very impressive figures of 13 – 2 - 41 - 5. It was nice to see in the 2nd XI a guest performance from top class player Richard “Mole Anderson who managed to take just one wicket with Ted Baker stealing a catch out of Thorpees hands.

Burnham’s total of 182 all out including “22 Extras looked like a very easy total for Sonning to get on home soil. However with Burnham having 2 pacey opening bowlers put pressure on Sonnings batsman straight away with Beefy, Retief “Quack Quack, Mole, Rentboy, Baker “Quack Quack, Naqas, Wazir and Naqas getting a combined total of just 35 runs. Yes that right 8 players 35 runs!!!!!

The only players saving Sonning from one of the worst batting performances of the season was opening in-form batsman “You think I’m Moody Now! – Wait until I’m married Benjo, who once putting on his lid looked like a true class batsman scoring a very respectful 44 in 26 overs.

The highlight of the game came when “I need a Fag and I know a few Thorpee and “Hitman Hilly came to occupy the crease, striking the ball like a roughed up boxer hitting 3 solid Fours. Thorpee with his first fifty of the season with 59, including, 10 Fours and 1 Six not out deservedly won him man of the match. Took Sonning to 169 just 14 runs short of winning the game with a last man standing partnership of 73 off 16 overs!
