Match Report

Elliot Dawes' Masterful 89 Anchors Sonning 4th XI to Commanding Victory at Aldershot

Sonning 4th XI travelled to Aldershot Park and delivered a comprehensive performance with bat and ball to secure a convincing win in Division 9C. Captain Arun Raghavendra won the toss and elected to bat, a decision that proved fully justified as Sonning posted an imposing 253 for 6 from their 40 overs before bowling out the hosts for just 129 in under 24 overs.

Elliot Dawes was the standout performer of the day, crafting a superb 89 from 105 balls laced with 15 fours. He was the constant presence at the crease throughout the Sonning innings, featuring in four of the six partnerships. After opener Matthew Dawes fell for 10, caught by wicketkeeper Purnachandra Rao Jagarlamudi off Mohamed Ayyash with the score on 26, Elliot Dawes found an aggressive partner in Shreyas Koppole, who blazed 40 from just 28 deliveries, hitting eight fours and a six. Their second-wicket stand of 55 pushed Sonning past 80 before Koppole was bowled by Eugene Schrikker.

The pivotal partnership of the innings came between Elliot Dawes and Daniel Parks, who combined for a magnificent 129-run stand for the third wicket. Parks compiled a measured half-century, reaching 52 from 78 balls with six boundaries, providing the ideal complement to the more fluent Dawes at the other end. By the time Parks was bowled by Ayyash, Sonning had moved to a commanding 210 for 3.

Elliot Dawes continued to accumulate before finally falling for 89, caught by Jagarlamudi off Harry Badland, with the score on 244. Late cameos from Raghavendra (10 off 9 balls) and Moksha Suriarachchi, who finished unbeaten on 5 from just 2 balls, helped Sonning to their formidable total. Aldershot's attack struggled for control throughout, conceding 42 extras including 20 wides. Ayyash finished with 3 for 36 from his seven overs, while Badland took 2 for 34, but the remaining six bowlers used failed to take a wicket between them.

Aldershot's reply got off to the worst possible start when Hayden Burton was caught by Suriarachchi off James Charlton-Perez for a duck with just 5 on the board. Anish Sam counter-attacked impressively, striking 42 from 41 balls with seven fours and a six, adding 48 with Stanley Longbottom for the second wicket to briefly give the home side hope. However, once Longbottom fell lbw to Shahbaz Ali for 10 and Sam was trapped lbw by Aahaan Sharma with the score on 74, the required rate had spiralled beyond reach.

William Nicholls (17 off 10 balls) and Harry Badland (10 off 6) hit out briefly, but Sonning's bowling attack kept taking wickets at regular intervals. Sharma was particularly effective, claiming 3 for 33 from his five overs, including the key wicket of Sam and a stumping of Schrikker for a golden duck, completed by Suriarachchi behind the stumps.

Christopher Dowse proved devastating at the death, ripping through the lower order with outstanding figures of 4 for 9 from just 2.5 overs. He removed captain Jagarlamudi, caught by Suriarachchi for 12, before cleaning up Azaan Ali, having Tristan Govender caught by Charlton-Perez, and completing the victory when William Barclay was stumped by Ali. Suriarachchi was involved in three dismissals behind the stumps, making a significant contribution in the field to complement his unbeaten knock with the bat.

The victory was emphatic in every sense, with Sonning winning by 124 runs and bowling Aldershot out with more than 16 overs to spare. It was a day where multiple Sonning players delivered telling contributions across both disciplines, with Elliot Dawes' innings of 89, Parks' half-century, and Dowse's four-wicket haul the highlights of a dominant all-round display.
