Match Report

Spartans Fall Short as Sabres Claim Victory in Intra-Club Friendly

Sonning CC's U11 Sabres won the toss and elected to bat on a pleasant morning at King George's Field, posting 89 for 8 from their 16 overs before successfully defending the total against the U11 Spartans, who could manage only 79 for 4 in reply.

The Sabres' innings was built around contributions from several batters rather than one dominant knock. Captain Viaan Choudermet top-scored with 13 off 15 balls, striking two boundaries, while Arjun Baradvaj matched that tally with an enterprising 13 off just eight deliveries. Ajith Vangara chipped in with 11 off 12 balls, and Abdul-Ahad Baig hit two fours in his brisk 10 off 10. It was a collective effort that gave the Sabres a competitive total, though 33 extras — including 24 wides — certainly inflated the scoreboard.

The Spartans' bowling attack showed admirable fight despite the loose deliveries. Reeva Desai was the pick of the bowlers, claiming 2 for 13 from her three overs with tidy control. Captain Harry Waite also took two wickets, though his three overs proved more expensive at 19 runs. Veeraj Sall and Kirrthhana Yennaboina each claimed a wicket apiece, while Jude Alden picked up one scalp from a single over that unfortunately included seven wides. Freddie Jansen delivered the most economical spell of the innings, conceding just a single run from his one over.

Chasing 90 to win, the Spartans needed early momentum but instead found run-scoring difficult. Veeraj Sall, opening the batting, managed just 1 off 12 balls, and the reply never truly gathered pace. Natalie De Boiserie was the standout batter for the Spartans, striking three fours in a fluent 12 off 12 balls to inject some urgency into the chase.

Freddie Jansen (8 off 10) and Kirrthhana Yennaboina (8 off 13) both contributed useful knocks, while Reeva Desai added 7 off 11 balls. Captain Waite made 6 from 14 deliveries, and Jude Alden matched that with a steady 6 off 14 at number eight. However, the Spartans could never quite find the acceleration needed, with too many dot balls stifling their progress.

The Sabres' bowling was impressively disciplined in defence of their total. Rudransh Singh was the most effective, taking 2 for 5 from two overs to apply real pressure during the middle of the innings. Captain Choudermet bowled with control, claiming 1 for 8 from two overs including a maiden, while Abdul-Ahad Baig was similarly miserly with figures of 0 for 4 from two overs, also bowling a maiden. Arjun Baradvaj picked up a wicket, though his two overs cost 12 runs including four no-balls.

Despite benefiting from 34 extras — including 14 byes and 12 wides — the Spartans ultimately fell 10 runs short of their target. It was a match that highlighted the growing talent across both of Sonning's U11 squads, with the Sabres' more consistent batting contributions and disciplined bowling proving the difference on the day.
