Match Report
Sabres Cruise to Comfortable Victory at King George's Field
Sonning U11 Sabres produced an assured all-round display to defeat Emmbrook & Bearwood in their BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) fixture at King George's Field on Sunday. Having won the toss and elected to field, captain Harry Waite's side restricted the visitors to 79 for 7 before chasing down the target with some authority, posting 121 for 8 from their 16 overs.
Emmbrook & Bearwood's innings was built largely around Isabel Smy, who top-scored with 20 from 30 balls, striking three boundaries in a patient knock that anchored the middle order. Luke Jones contributed 7 from 15 deliveries, while Joseph Pill (5) and Declan Pilling (4) provided brief resistance at the top of the order, but no other batter could establish themselves against a disciplined Sonning attack.
The pick of the Sabres' bowlers was Arthur Teed, who claimed three wickets from his three overs while conceding just 10 runs. His ability to find the edge and take crucial scalps in the middle overs put the visitors firmly on the back foot. Jessica Hawkins was equally impressive, returning figures of 2 for 4 from two overs, including a maiden — an outstanding spell of control for a young bowler. Jasper Hawkins chipped in with two wickets of his own, albeit at a slightly higher cost of 15 runs from three overs.
Extras played a significant role in the first innings, with 40 additional runs — including 24 wides — bolstering the Emmbrook total beyond what their batters alone managed. The Sonning bowlers will recognise the need to tighten up in that department, though the wicket-taking threat more than compensated.
The Sabres' reply was emphatic. Alexander Hatchett-Walker set the tone at the top with a brisk 15 from 14 balls, cracking two fours to get the chase off to a positive start. Alexander Green matched that energy with 13 from just 9 deliveries, his two boundaries helping to build early momentum that the visitors never managed to arrest.
The middle order kept the scoreboard moving, with Ruby Cross grinding out 8 from 15 balls and Jessica Hawkins adding 7. But it was Lewis Towner who delivered the most destructive innings of the match, smashing 17 from just 11 balls with three fours — an innings that effectively killed off any remaining hopes for Emmbrook & Bearwood. Captain Waite provided a composed contribution of 13 from 13 balls lower down, ensuring the Sabres sailed past their target.
Reyaan Gupta was the standout bowler for the visitors, picking up four wickets from his three overs, though he conceded 22 runs in the process. Navya Sharma also claimed two scalps from fewer than two overs. However, the Emmbrook attack struggled with discipline, sending down 19 wides and 10 no-balls, gifting Sonning 43 extras that made the chase considerably more comfortable than the bare totals might suggest.
The victory earns Sonning the full 20 league points and underlines the depth of their squad, with every member of the eight-player side contributing either with bat or ball in a thoroughly professional team performance.
