Sonning take giant strides towards the premier title

SONNING took a massive step towards winning the Premier Division title with an 80-run success against second-placed Purley last weekend.

The Pound Lane side now look odds on to clinch their fourth Premier Division title in six years and reclaim the crown from defending champions Purley.

In the end, last weekend's top-ofthe-table clash proved to be something of an anti-climax as Sonning out-classed their opponents thanks to a remarkable bowling display from spinner Nisar Ahmed.

In a low-scoring encounter, Naz Hussain top-scored for Sonning with 61 as they were limited to 188-6 in their innings.

However, Purley were always struggling in reply despite a battling 48 from Caleb Maycock.

In the end Purley finished well short of their target as they were skittled out for just 108, with Ahmed finishing with fantastic figures of 7-41.

Sonning's 35-point victory helped the club to a superb weekend haul of 105 points as all three of their Berkshire League teams picked up maximum 35-point wins after batting first in their respective games.
