Match Report

Sidhu and Jayan's Record Opening Stand Steers Sonning 4th XI to Victory at Yateley

Sonning 4th XI travelled to Sean Devereux Park and posted an imposing 248 for 6 from their 40 overs before defending the total successfully, with Yateley finishing on 225 for 7 in this Division 10B encounter. Captain Kabir Dave won the tactical battle after Yateley skipper James Henstock elected to field first, a decision that would prove costly as Sonning's openers put on a mammoth partnership.

Aveer Sidhu and Gaurav Jayan produced the match-defining performance with a stunning opening stand of 180 runs. The pair took full advantage of a generous Yateley attack that conceded 51 extras across the innings, including 28 wides and 8 no-balls. Jayan was the early aggressor, racing to fifty in 70 balls with ten fours to his name, while Sidhu played the anchor role before accelerating, reaching his half-century in 66 balls. By the time Jayan was bowled by Aziz Rahman for 70 off 86 deliveries, having struck 13 boundaries, Sonning were already sitting comfortably at 180 for 1.

Sidhu continued to punish the bowling and eventually fell for a superb 75 off 102 balls, his innings laced with 12 fours and two sixes, caught by Shourya Patre off Rahman's bowling at 186 for 2. Yateley briefly tightened things up as wickets fell in a cluster — Toby Fitton departed for just 1, caught off Srikanth Chowdary, and Sonning wobbled slightly at 190 for 3. However, Ollie Terry (17 off 25) and Philemon Pon (15 off 19) added a useful 36 for the fourth wicket to restore momentum. Late cameos from Sagar Dave (7 not out off 4 balls) and Kabir Dave (9 off 5) ensured Sonning pushed past the 240 mark.

Rahman was the pick of Yateley's bowlers with figures of 2 for 29 from his eight overs, while wicketkeeper Bertie Henstock claimed 2 for 16 from just two overs. The remaining six bowlers used by Yateley went wicketless, with Joshua Buck proving particularly expensive, conceding 51 from his six overs including five no-balls.

Yateley's reply began promisingly as Henstock and Anthony Mcgowan put together an excellent opening partnership of 124. Henstock was the more attacking of the two, smashing four sixes and seven fours in a quickfire 61 off 64 balls, reaching his fifty in just 53 deliveries. Mcgowan was equally impressive, accumulating 56 off 70 balls with nine boundaries. At 124 for 0, the home side appeared well in the hunt.

The breakthrough came when Christopher Dowse bowled Henstock, and just seven runs later he struck again to remove Mcgowan for 56, swinging the contest firmly in Sonning's favour. From 131 for 2, Yateley lost Rahman (11) to a catch from Ollie Terry off Kabir Dave's bowling, and then Ollie Watts fell lbw to the Sonning captain for just 2, leaving the hosts at 159 for 4. Shourya Patre fought valiantly with 33 off 39 balls before being run out at 192 for 6, and although Srikanth Chowdary added a brisk 18, Geethika Jyothis bowled him to leave Yateley at 219 for 7 with too much to do.

Dowse finished as Sonning's most economical bowler with excellent figures of 2 for 30 from eight overs including two maidens, while Kabir Dave claimed 2 for 53 from his full allocation. Geethika Jyothis (1-35) and Isaac Jenner (1-28) chipped in with a wicket apiece. The 23-run victory earned Sonning a full 22 league points and underlined the importance of that extraordinary opening partnership between Sidhu and Jayan, which effectively set the foundation for the entire match.
