Match Report

Sharks Fall Short as Wargrave Prove Too Strong at Home

Sonning U11 Sharks travelled to Wargrave Cricket Club on 18 June for a BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) North West league fixture and were unable to contain a powerful home batting display, ultimately falling to a 61-run defeat in this pairs format encounter.

Wargrave won the toss and elected to bat, making full use of the decision as they posted an imposing 127 for 4 from their 16 overs. Ben Lewis set the tone at the top of the order with a brisk 20 off 18 balls, striking four boundaries to get the innings off to a flying start. Captain Nathaniel Bell continued the assault from number three, compiling 22 off 19 deliveries, also finding the rope four times. Harrison Symes weighed in with 21 off 18 balls, while George Cook added a useful 13, ensuring Wargrave's total was well beyond par.

The Sharks' bowlers found life difficult, conceding 43 extras across the innings — 17 wides and 14 no-balls proving particularly costly. Viaan Choudermet was the pick of the Sonning attack, claiming 2 for 13 from his two overs to provide the only real breakthrough. Captain Seve Horton and Niko Jordinson each took a wicket apiece while bowling their extended three-over spells, finishing with figures of 1 for 25 and 1 for 18 respectively. Dhruv Kashetty bowled tidily, conceding just 8 runs from two overs, though without reward.

Chasing 128, the Sharks' reply never truly gained momentum. Opening pair Dhruv Kashetty (5 off 16 balls) and Arjun Baradvaj (1 off 8) struggled against a disciplined Wargrave bowling unit, and early wickets put Sonning firmly on the back foot. Viaan Choudermet offered some resistance with a spirited 10 off 12 balls, including two fours, while Jaiden Patel contributed 7 with a boundary of his own, but neither could build the substantial partnership the chase demanded.

Harrison Symes was outstanding with the ball for Wargrave, returning remarkable figures of 3 for 4 from three overs, including a maiden, to rip the heart out of the Sharks' batting order. Marco Van chipped in with 2 for 8 from two overs, and the hosts' discipline was further demonstrated by Nathaniel Bell (0 for 4 from two overs with a maiden) and a guest player who took 2 for 2 from two overs with a maiden of his own.

Captain Seve Horton provided the brightest moment of the Sharks' innings, top-scoring with 13 off 14 balls and hitting two boundaries as he came in at number seven. Freddie Jansen offered some support at the tail with 5 off 10, but by then the asking rate had long spiralled out of reach. Rudransh Singh endured a difficult time at the crease, unable to score from his 12 deliveries, while Niko Jordinson managed just a single from the same allocation.

The Sharks were eventually bowled out for 66 from their 16 overs, losing 11 wickets in the process — a tally that underlined how effectively Wargrave's attack exploited the five-run dismissal penalty in this pairs format. The 24 extras in Sonning's innings, while not insignificant, were far fewer than those conceded by their own bowlers, and the 61-run margin of defeat reflected a match in which Wargrave were dominant in all three disciplines.
