Sonning Sunday 1s Fall Short as Wealdstone Corinthians Chase Down 192 at Knowl Hill
Sonning Sunday 1s were left to rue a middle-order collapse as Wealdstone Corinthians successfully chased down 192 in a friendly at Knowl Hill on 26 July. After winning the toss and electing to field, the visitors' decision was vindicated by a devastating five-wicket haul from Shivam Dhangdharia that restricted Sonning to 191 all out in 33.1 overs, before a masterful 92-run second-wicket partnership between Dipen Patel and David Redhead steered the chase home with three wickets in hand.
Captain Richard Skeil and wicketkeeper Alex Mcloughlin gave Sonning a positive start at the top of the order, putting on 44 for the first wicket. Skeil struck five boundaries in a brisk 23 from 28 balls before he was caught by Himanshu Rally off the bowling of Amol Shah. Mcloughlin continued in aggressive fashion, clearing the rope twice in his 24 off just 21 deliveries, but when he was bowled by Vishal Kumar with the score on 50, Sonning's momentum stalled dramatically.
The innings lurched to crisis point when Daniel Parks was bowled by Kumar for a duck just two balls into his knock, leaving Sonning 50 for 3. Robert Jones steadied the ship with the innings' top score of 39, an anchor role built on seven boundaries across 41 balls. His 49-run fourth-wicket stand with Bharat Rathod (10) was the partnership that gave the innings its backbone, pushing the total past the 99 mark before Rathod was caught off Dhangdharia.
Jones added a further 25 with Neil Jasti for the fifth wicket before falling caught at 124, again to the persistent Dhangdharia. Jasti contributed a useful 23 from 16 balls, but once he departed at 135, the lower order was systematically dismantled. Dhangdharia finished with remarkable figures of 5-26 from his six overs, while Samir Patel chipped in with 2-17 from just 2.1 overs. A spirited last-wicket stand of 28 between Isaac Jenner (12) and Kishan Akula, who finished unbeaten on 16 with four boundaries, at least pushed the total beyond 190. The 26 extras, including 17 byes, flattered the scorecard somewhat.
Wealdstone's reply began shakily when Gaurav Sharma was caught off Kishan Akula with just five runs on the board. That early breakthrough, however, merely brought together the partnership that would define the match. Dipen Patel and David Redhead combined for a commanding 92-run second-wicket stand that wrested control away from Sonning's attack entirely. Patel was the more fluent of the two, dispatching nine fours and a six in a classy half-century of 53 from 69 balls before he was caught by Mcloughlin off Robert Jones's bowling with the score on 97.
Redhead maintained the momentum despite losing his partner, adding 28 with Swaroop Kumar (10) for the third wicket before Kumar was caught off Jasti. Redhead's own innings of 49 from 51 balls, featuring seven fours and two sixes, fell agonisingly short of a deserved fifty when he was bowled by Jasti at 130 for 4. Captain Dharmik Shah contributed 16 in a 27-run fifth-wicket partnership with Steve Brown, and though Akula picked up three wickets — including both Shah and the aggressive Vishal Kumar (12 off 8 balls, with two sixes) — to give himself figures of 3-35, the damage had already been done.
Steve Brown anchored the closing stages with an unbeaten 19 from 47 balls, seeing Wealdstone home to 193 for 7 in 38.3 overs. James Charlton-Perez had been Sonning's most economical bowler with 0-9 from four overs, but too often the visitors found the boundary when they needed to, and the nine bowlers used by Sonning — including Bharat Rathod's expensive single over of 1-0-8-0, which included five no-balls — lacked the sustained pressure required to defend the total. For Sonning, it was a match in which promising contributions with the bat failed to convert into a match-winning score, and the bowling attack simply could not contain the Patel-Redhead axis during that crucial second-wicket partnership.
