Match Report
Falcons Fall Short as Wargrave Dominate at Home
Sonning U9 Falcons suffered a heavy defeat at the hands of Wargrave in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league fixture at Wargrave Cricket Club on Sunday, with the hosts posting 163 to Sonning's 85 in a one-sided contest.
Wargrave won the toss and inserted the Falcons to bat first. Kabir Nair Bansode provided the brightest moment of the Sonning innings, striking a team-high 15 runs from just 13 balls, including two crisp boundaries, to give the visitors early impetus at the top of the order. Aadvik Gonchikar matched that intent lower down, contributing an impressive 11 from 12 balls with two fours of his own to offer some much-needed momentum in the latter stages of the innings.
Beyond those two contributions, however, runs proved difficult to come by for the Falcons. Veeraj Sall added six, while Aaditya Amrite managed four, but the middle order struggled to build any sustained partnerships. Ronith Pera was dismissed three times during his stay at the crease, while Max Chapman could muster only a single from 14 deliveries as the Wargrave bowlers applied consistent pressure.
Wargrave captain Nathaniel Bell was the pick of the home attack, delivering a devastating spell of 2-0-2-4 — conceding just two runs from his two overs while claiming four wickets. Archie Shaw chipped in with three wickets, and Axel Angus took two, leaving the Falcons bowled out for 85 from their 20 overs, with 41 of those runs coming from extras.
The response from Wargrave was emphatic. Bell, who had starred with the ball, saved his best for the batting innings, smashing an unbeaten 31 from 12 deliveries, striking five fours and a six in a breathtaking display that put the result beyond any doubt. Archie Shaw was equally impressive with the bat, cracking 19 from 12 balls with four boundaries, while William Wallace contributed a composed 14 featuring two fours.
The Wargrave batting was remarkably consistent throughout. Isabel Rothermel struck 10, Emilia Sutherland added 11, and Trystan Comerford-Green weighed in with eight, as virtually every batter in the home line-up made a meaningful contribution. Wargrave lost only four wickets across their 20 overs, with Zachary Plumber and Aaditya Amrite claiming one apiece for the Falcons.
The Sonning bowling attack was made to toil on a difficult afternoon. Aadvik Gonchikar returned the most economical figures of 2-0-7-0, while Leopold Ellis kept things relatively tight at 2-0-9-0. At the other end, the Falcons conceded 55 extras — including 36 wides — which compounded their difficulties as Wargrave cruised to victory with a total of 163.
It was a tough day for captain Thoren Alford and his young side, but the performances of Kabir Nair Bansode and Aadvik Gonchikar with the bat offered genuine encouragement for the Falcons as the league campaign continues.
