Sonning 2nd XI Fall Agonisingly Short as Maxfield Century Proves Decisive

Sonning 2nd XI were left to rue a narrow one-run defeat at home to Yateley in Division 6B of the Thames Valley Cricket League, bowled out for 226 in pursuit of 228 despite a remarkable late onslaught from Oliver Rowe.

Captain Gary Phillips won the toss and inserted Yateley on a good batting surface at Sonning, but the decision was made to look questionable as Harry Maxfield produced a superb innings at the top of the order. Opening the batting, Maxfield anchored the Yateley innings throughout, reaching his fifty from 59 balls before going on to compile a commanding century — 103 from 115 deliveries, laced with 11 fours and a six. His was an innings of patience and authority, and he was involved in all the significant partnerships of the first innings.

Oliver Rowe provided the early breakthrough for Sonning, having Sanjeet Garood caught by Mannu Rawat for 5 before bowling Duncan MacGregor for 4 to finish with figures of 2-30 from his eight overs. However, Maxfield found an able ally in Yateley skipper Scott Gore, the pair putting on 80 for the third wicket. Gore contributed a fluent 38 from 46 balls before being caught by Rawat off the bowling of David Rowe. Chris Petts then added 53 with Maxfield for the fourth wicket, striking 23 from 29 balls before Peter Compton-Burnett removed both Petts and Jez Daines in quick succession, finishing with 2-26 from four overs. Rawat also claimed two wickets, including the prized scalp of Maxfield, caught by Oliver Rowe for 103. Yateley closed on 227-7 from their 40 overs.

Sonning's reply got off to a blistering start thanks to Peter Dean, who smashed 26 from just 13 balls, cracking six fours in a breathtaking opening salvo. The first-wicket stand of 29 was broken when Sanjeet Garood had Dean caught, but Gerard Soames provided the anchor at the other end, batting through to 101-5 with a patient 26 from 67 deliveries. Soames shared useful partnerships with Rawat (22 for the second wicket) and Louis Dean (39 for the third wicket), the younger Dean contributing an attractive 25 from 20 balls with three fours before being bowled by Owen Evans.

When Soames fell at 101-5, caught by Maxfield off Evans, and Dan Anderson departed cheaply for 2, Sonning were in deep trouble at 101-5 and needing 127 from what remained. Wicketkeeper Paul Boyle and Compton-Burnett steadied matters with a partnership of 35 for the sixth wicket, Boyle hitting one six in his 13 before being caught off Gerhard Pienaar.

The match turned dramatically when Oliver Rowe strode to the crease at number eight. Having already impressed with the ball, Rowe produced an extraordinary counter-attacking innings of 52 from just 23 balls, clearing the boundary five times and finding the rope on three further occasions. He added 43 with Compton-Burnett for the seventh wicket and a further 24 with Adeel Chaudry for the eighth, hauling Sonning back into contention and bringing up his fifty from just 20 deliveries. Sam Sugars eventually had Rowe bowled for 52, and with him went Sonning's hopes.

Sugars was the pick of the Yateley attack with 3-39 from eight overs, while Evans and Gerhard Pienaar each claimed two wickets. Phillips remained unbeaten on 13 at the end, but David Rowe was bowled by Andre Pienaar to bring the innings to a close at 226 all out in the 40th over. A margin of just one run separated the sides in what proved a cruel conclusion for the hosts, who will reflect on several missed opportunities across both innings.
