Sonning Sunday 1s Fall 18 Runs Short in Spirited Chase Against Wraysbury

Wraysbury won the toss and elected to bat at King George's Field on a sun-drenched Sunday afternoon, and their decision was vindicated by a commanding opening display. Harry Freeman set the tone from the outset, striking 17 fours in an authoritative 86 from 85 balls that formed the backbone of the visitors' innings. After Huzaefa Shahzad fell cheaply for 4, trapped lbw by Isaac Jenner with the score on 17, Freeman anchored a productive 66-run second-wicket partnership with Sam Garrett, who contributed a steady 24 from 53 deliveries before being caught by Bubbu Thava off the bowling of Robert Jones.

Freeman continued to dominate, adding a further 60 for the third wicket alongside Asaa Umar before Christopher Dowse finally ended his stay, a catch bringing to a close an innings that had taken Wraysbury to 143 for 3. Umar then assumed the mantle of aggressor, striking six fours in his 38 from 50 balls, and although captain Elliot Gray pegged back the visitors with two quick wickets — including Umar lbw and Michael Macmillan caught for a duck — the damage had already been done. A brisk 20 from nine balls by Oluwatoke Akinseye and 10 off five from Shafran Jones boosted the lower order before Arthur Parkes wrapped up the innings, finishing with 2 for 27 from his 6.5 overs. Dowse claimed 3 for 51 and Gray 3 for 50 as Wraysbury were bowled out for 231 in 38.5 overs.

Sonning's chase began disastrously. Neil Jasti was trapped lbw by Sam Garrett from the very first ball he faced, leaving the hosts reeling at 0 for 1. Richard Skeil counter-attacked in thrilling fashion, cracking six fours in a rapid 31 from 29 balls and adding 27 for the second wicket with Robert Jones, who made 10. But when Jones fell bowled by Harry Freeman and Vamsi Jasti was cleaned up by Garrett for a duck shortly afterwards, Sonning found themselves in trouble at 32 for 3.

Skeil's dismissal, bowled by Pirakeith Gobi for 31 with the score on 65, might have signalled a collapse, but Christopher Dowse and Arthur Parkes responded with the most crucial partnership of the innings. The pair put on 38 for the fifth wicket, with Parkes the dominant force, smashing six fours in an explosive 29 from just 20 balls before being caught off Huzaefa Shahzad. Dowse contributed a composed 21 from 39 balls before Gobi had him bowled, and at 107 for 6, Sonning's task looked increasingly steep.

Bharat Rathod and Elliot Gray steadied the ship with a patient 37-run seventh-wicket stand. Rathod made 13 before falling lbw to Michael Macmillan, and Gray anchored the innings with 24 from 48 balls, keeping Sonning's hopes flickering. When Gray was eventually bowled by Garrett for 24 at 172 for 8, the equation required 60 from the remaining overs with only the tail to come.

Enter Bubbu Thava. Batting at number nine, the wicketkeeper produced an outstanding counter-attacking innings of 49 from 42 balls, striking nine fours in a display that almost single-handedly dragged Sonning back into contention. Thava added 28 with Gray for the eighth wicket and then a crucial 23 for the last wicket with James Charlton-Perez, who held firm for an unbeaten 2 from 11 balls. The final partnership brought genuine hope to the Sonning faithful, but Harry Freeman had the last word, bowling Thava one agonising run short of a half-century to seal Wraysbury's victory.

Sonning were bowled out for 213 in 39.3 overs, falling 18 runs short of their target. Sam Garrett was the pick of the Wraysbury attack with 3 for 35 from eight overs, ably supported by Harry Freeman's 3 for 28 and Gobi's 2 for 30. Despite the defeat, Thava's defiant knock and the collective fight shown by the lower order ensured Sonning emerged from a difficult afternoon with considerable credit.
