Spartans Fall Short as Littlewick Green Claim Victory at King George's Field

Sonning U11 Spartans suffered defeat at home to Littlewick Green in the BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) North East fixture on Tuesday evening, falling 31 runs short in their pursuit of 148 at King George's Field.

Captain Lewis Towner won the toss and chose to field first, but Littlewick Green's batters made the most of being put in, posting 147 for 8 from their 20 overs. R Stone and captain Zach Dries were the standout performers with the bat, each striking 18 runs apiece. Stone was particularly aggressive at the top of the order, cracking three boundaries from just 12 deliveries, while Dries matched him with three fours of his own from the middle order. C Shears provided a valuable contribution lower down with 16 off 17 balls, and James Spotswood chipped in with 15 to ensure the visitors' total was bolstered across the card. A significant 53 extras, including 39 wides, inflated the total considerably and proved costly for the Spartans.

Seve Horton was the pick of the Sonning bowling attack, delivering an excellent spell of 3 for 17 from his three overs, making regular breakthroughs to keep the hosts in the contest. Chloe Dawes complemented Horton well, claiming 2 for 12 from her three overs in an economical display, while Ethan Cawsey picked up 2 for 10 from his overs. Harry Waite also claimed a wicket, though his two overs proved expensive with 14 wides conceded.

In reply, the Spartans found the required rate challenging from the outset as Littlewick Green's bowlers applied consistent pressure. Zach Dries produced a remarkable opening spell, bowling a maiden over and claiming a wicket without conceding a run. R Stone was equally disciplined at the other end, conceding just 10 runs from three overs with a maiden, while picking up a wicket of his own.

Arjun Chirunamala provided the most explosive contribution of the Sonning innings, smashing 20 off just 11 balls with four boundaries in a counterattacking display that momentarily gave the hosts hope. Towner contributed 15 from 13 balls batting at number nine, while both Chloe Dawes and Alexander Hatchett-Walker scored 12 apiece to keep the scoreboard ticking. Dawes showed resilience despite being dismissed four times during her innings, while Hatchett-Walker found the boundary rope twice during his knock.

C Shears proved influential with the ball as well as the bat, returning figures of 2 for 3 from two overs in a miserly spell that strangled the Sonning middle order. Riddhit Dasgupta also impressed, taking 2 for 19, and the wickets were shared around with T Howson and Morgan Young each claiming one apiece. The visitors' bowling attack was notably more disciplined than Sonning's, conceding just 32 extras compared to the Spartans' 53.

Ethan Cawsey's unbeaten 10 from 12 balls and Harry Waite's 7 kept the Spartans fighting in the closing overs, but the deficit proved too great. Sonning were ultimately bowled out for 116 from their 20 overs, with nine wickets falling. Despite the result, Chirunamala's blistering knock with the bat and Horton's three-wicket haul with the ball were encouraging individual performances for the Spartans to build upon.
