Match Report

Sonning Women Secure Home Victory Over Slough in Pairs Contest

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a five-run victory over Slough at King George's Field on 12th May, defending a total of 87 in this Super 8 Development Group 1 encounter. After Slough captain Jamila Ghori won the toss and opted to field, Sonning set about building a competitive score in the pairs format.

Chloe Bailey was the standout performer with the bat for Sonning, striking a fluent 24 from just 18 deliveries, an innings laced with four boundaries that provided the backbone of the home side's total. Bailey's attacking intent ensured the scoring rate never stagnated, and her contribution proved decisive in the context of the match.

The middle order found runs harder to come by, with Frances Howson contributing 5 from 16 balls and captain Katie Barrows managing just 1 from 15 deliveries. Sophie Parker added a handy 5 from 9 balls, including a boundary, while Rebecca Malhi chipped in with 4. Extras played a significant role in Sonning's total, with 26 additional runs — including 14 no-balls and 8 wides — boosting the scoreboard considerably. Ruhi Kashyap was the pick of the Slough bowlers, returning figures of 4-1-19-1, while Aamna Ahmed claimed 1-21 from her three overs.

Slough's reply began positively through Aamna Ahmed, who top-scored with 13 from 12 balls, finding the boundary twice before being dismissed. Lamisah Khan offered the most resistance in the middle order, hitting 15 from 13 deliveries with two fours, but wickets fell at regular intervals to keep Sonning in control.

Chloe Bailey backed up her batting display with an impressive spell of bowling, claiming 2-13 from her three overs to emerge as the match's outstanding all-round performer. Frances Howson supported well with 1-16 from three overs, while Grace Phillips delivered an economical four-over spell of 4-1-8-0, including a maiden, that applied sustained pressure through the middle overs.

Slough captain Jamila Ghori battled to 8 from 15 balls and Adeeba Manaf contributed 8 from 11, but neither could accelerate sufficiently to overhaul the target. Ruhi Kashyap was dismissed twice in her innings of 2 from 12 balls, and Aiza Pirzada could manage only 3 from her 12 deliveries as the required rate climbed beyond reach.

In the end, Slough finished on 82 for 5 from their 16 overs, falling five runs short. The victory earned Sonning six league points and was built on Bailey's all-round excellence and disciplined bowling from Phillips, whose tight spells denied the visitors momentum when they needed it most.
