Match Report
U15 Sharks Post 151 to Secure Victory at The Watson Oval
Sonning U15 Sharks travelled to The Watson Oval and delivered a commanding batting display to defeat Sulhamstead & Ufton in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge on Friday evening. Captain Neil Jasti won the toss and chose to bat, a decision vindicated as the Sharks posted 151 for 2 from their 20 overs before restricting the hosts to 142 for 8 in reply.
Kishan Akula set the tone at the top of the order, striking six fours in a brisk 31 from 26 balls before retiring not out. His opening partner Jasti fell early for 5, caught by Jacob Gearing off the bowling of Alex Doherty, but the Sharks quickly regrouped. Shreyas Koppole joined the fray at number three and matched Akula's fluency, compiling 30 from 29 deliveries with four boundaries before also retiring.
The middle order maintained the momentum through a crucial partnership. Ollie Terry anchored proceedings with a mature 25 not out from 35 balls, while Christopher Dowse contributed a valuable 22 off 24 deliveries, the pair adding substantially to the total during a second-wicket stand worth 138 runs. Dowse was eventually bowled by Gearing, but by then the damage was well and truly done. Sulhamstead & Ufton's bowling attack leaked 37 extras, including 28 wides, which proved particularly costly. Only Alex Doherty, who returned figures of 2-1-4-1 including a maiden, offered sustained control with the ball.
Chasing 152, the hosts found themselves in early trouble at 14 for 2. Affan Tak struck first, having Daniel Braithwaite caught by Neel Kumar for 8, before Nathan Salisbury removed Oliver Jacobs for 2, with Tak taking the catch.
Doherty and Gearing then mounted a spirited fightback. Doherty counter-attacked with five fours in a rapid 31 from 20 balls, while Gearing played the innings of the match — a superb 53 from just 32 deliveries featuring seven fours and a six, reaching his half-century off the final ball of the innings. Their third-wicket partnership of 76 threatened to turn the contest on its head and kept Sulhamstead & Ufton in the hunt.
However, once both retired, the Sharks' bowling attack dismantled the remaining batting. Edward Hanson was the standout performer with the ball, claiming 2 for 18 from his three overs, clean bowling Thomas Grace for 8 and Will Clark for 3 in quick succession. Joseph Dowse also proved influential, picking up 2 for 25, including the caught-and-bowled dismissal of Siddhanth Gopinath and the scalp of Jude Kornelissen, caught by Salisbury, as the hosts slumped from 90 for 2 to 115 for 8. Neel Kumar was involved in two sharp pieces of fielding, taking the catch to dismiss Braithwaite and effecting the run out of Vaishvik Karthikeyan.
Neil Parimoo hit an unbeaten 8 including a six to offer late resistance, but Sulhamstead & Ufton ultimately finished nine runs short on 142 for 8, handing the Sharks a well-deserved victory built on disciplined batting and incisive bowling when it mattered most.
