Sabres Struggle to Contain Marlow's Big Hitters in Heavy BYCL Defeat
Sonning U11 Sabres travelled to Marlow on 9th June for their BYCL Under 11 T16 Pairs league fixture and, despite winning the toss and choosing to field first, found themselves on the wrong end of a comprehensive defeat as the home side posted a formidable 177 from their 20 overs before restricting the Sabres to just 88 in reply.
Marlow's innings was built around two outstanding individual performances. Finn Robinson struck a superb 59 from 58 balls, dispatching six fours and a six in an innings of genuine quality for this age group. Anna Helliwell was equally impressive at the other end, compiling 49 from 47 deliveries with six boundaries of her own. The pair's dominance meant that the remaining Marlow batters were scarcely required, with captain Casper Middleton contributing six from 15 balls at the top of the order.
The Sabres' bowling attack found conditions difficult, with extras proving a significant factor. A total of 63 extras — including 41 wides and 20 no-balls — swelled Marlow's total considerably. Archie Jansen was the most economical of the Sonning bowlers, conceding just 10 runs from his two overs without a wicket. Jude Alden claimed one wicket from his three overs, though his six no-balls proved costly as he conceded 29 runs. Captain Eleanor Hatchett-Walker also picked up a wicket but went for 18 runs from two overs, with 12 of those coming as wides.
Chasing 178 for victory, the Sabres found the Marlow bowling attack far more disciplined and threatening. Wickets fell at regular intervals, with 12 dismissals across the innings making run-scoring extremely difficult. Finn Wales was the pick of the Marlow bowlers, claiming four wickets from his two overs while conceding just six runs — a devastating spell that ripped the heart out of the Sonning batting order.
Archie Jansen showed admirable fight at the crease, top-scoring for the Sabres with 18 runs from 52 balls, including three fours, though he was dismissed seven times during his extended stay. Matyas Sheppard batted through much of the innings for 14 from 44 balls, while Eleanor Hatchett-Walker contributed a brisk seven from 11 deliveries with one boundary. Alexander Hatchett-Walker added six from 13 balls.
Oliver Coombs and Matty Phillips were particularly miserly for Marlow, each bowling a maiden in their two-over spells while taking a wicket apiece and conceding just three and five runs respectively. Finn Robinson added two wickets to his earlier batting heroics, and captain Casper Middleton also chipped in with two scalps from his two overs.
The Sabres' total of 88, which included 43 extras, fell well short of Marlow's imposing target. It was a tough day in the field and with the bat for the young Sonning side, though Jansen's resilience and the wickets claimed by Alden and Hatchett-Walker offered some encouragement to build upon in future fixtures.
