Match Report

D'Roza's Sublime 42 Not Out Steers Sonning Women to Comfortable Victory

Sonning Women's 1st XI secured a convincing eight-wicket victory over High Wycombe at King George's Field on Sunday, chasing down a target of 101 with more than nine overs to spare in this Division 3 A encounter.

Captain Grace Phillips won the toss and opted to field first, a decision vindicated by a disciplined bowling display that restricted High Wycombe to 100 for 9 from their full allocation of 25 overs. The visitors' innings never truly gained momentum, as they lost both openers cheaply to leave themselves struggling at 9 for 2. Emma Petersen departed for a duck in the opening over, bowled by Phillips, before Geethika Jyothis trapped Daniella Coker for 5 to tighten Sonning's grip.

Yuliia Nehadova offered the most resistance at the top of the order, striking four boundaries in a brisk 19 from 18 balls. Her third-wicket partnership of 25 with Ruby Juster-White briefly steadied the ship, but Jyothis ended the stand with a well-judged lbw decision. Jyothis's figures of 2 for 5 from five overs, including three maidens, were outstanding and set the tone for Sonning's bowling effort.

Chloe Bailey proved equally effective through the middle overs, claiming three wickets for 16 runs from her four overs. She dismissed Juster-White for 7, bowled Jillian Armiger for a duck in quick succession, and later accounted for Jo Sketchley to finish as the leading wicket-taker. Maya Ali contributed a useful 16 from 22 balls, but she was well held by Elinor Longridge off the bowling of Nic Blunden, while Rebecca Malhi chipped in with the wicket of skipper Anna Cooper. Hannah Brooks completed a sharp run-out of Elliot Puddephatt to keep the pressure firmly on the visitors. Phillips herself was miserly at the top, conceding just 5 runs from four overs with two maidens.

High Wycombe's total was significantly bolstered by 42 extras, including 23 wides and 15 no-balls, an area Sonning will look to tighten up despite the positive result. Only 58 runs came from the bat across the entire innings, underscoring just how well the home side's bowlers performed.

The chase was emphatic. Loryn D'Roza and Sophie Parker put on 39 for the first wicket, setting the platform with aggressive intent from the outset. Parker contributed 7 before being bowled by Ali, and Jyothis added a quickfire 8 from seven balls including two fours before Ali claimed her second wicket with a caught-and-bowled. At 59 for 2, Sonning still required 42, but there was never any real anxiety.

D'Roza was imperious throughout, carrying her bat for an unbeaten 42 from 45 deliveries, lacing nine boundaries in a commanding display of stroke-play. Phillips joined her at the crease and matched her intent, striking three fours in an unbeaten 27 from 31 balls. Their unbroken third-wicket partnership guided Sonning home in just 15.5 overs, completing a thoroughly professional run chase that kept High Wycombe's bowlers searching in vain for breakthroughs.

The win sees Sonning collect a full 25 league points, while High Wycombe take away 8 points including 3 bonus points for batting. It was a complete team performance from the home side, with the ball shared around nine bowlers and the chase executed with clinical efficiency.
