Falcons Fall Short as Extras Prove Costly in Defeat to Littlewick Green

Sonning U9 Falcons suffered a frustrating defeat at home to Littlewick Green in the U9 Super 8s North East league on 30th July, with an extraordinary 65 extras conceded in the second innings ultimately proving the difference between the two sides.

Littlewick Green won the toss and inserted Sonning, and the Falcons made a solid start with the bat. Openers Arthur Teed and Alexander Hatchett-Walker both contributed 11 runs apiece, Teed striking a boundary in his 13-ball stay while Hatchett-Walker scored at a run a ball from just eight deliveries. The pair laid a useful platform for those who followed.

Contributions came throughout the Sonning order, with Archie Jansen top-scoring with a brisk 13 off 10 balls batting at number ten, finding the boundary once. Heet Panchal was the other standout performer, hitting two fours in a well-compiled 12 from 14 deliveries. Aryaansh Rawat (10 off 13) and Anay Patel (10 off 14) also reached double figures, while Hemanvi Vallabhaneni chipped in with a useful 8 from 8 balls. Chester Shepherd was the pick of the Littlewick Green bowlers, claiming 2 wickets from his two overs, while Tom Howson, Satyan Padhi, and Milan Arora took a wicket each. Sonning posted 111 for 6 from their 19 overs — a competitive total that should have given them something to defend.

The Falcons' bowling, however, was undermined by a lack of accuracy. A staggering 40 wides were conceded across the innings, with a further 13 byes and 10 no-balls pushing the extras tally to 65 — more than half of Littlewick Green's winning total of 129 for 6. Rudra Halai's two overs proved particularly expensive, going for 22 runs including 12 wides and 4 no-balls, while Oliver Baker conceded 16 from his two overs with 7 wides.

Littlewick Green's batters did not need to take many risks given the generosity of the Sonning attack. Tom Howson was the visitors' leading run-scorer with 14 off 13 balls, while Milan Arora contributed a handy 13 from 16 deliveries batting at number ten. Zach Dries added 10 from just 8 balls lower in the order to keep the scoreboard ticking along comfortably.

There were encouraging signs with the ball for Sonning, particularly from Archie Jansen, who turned in the most economical spell of the innings with figures of 2-0-7-1, conceding just two wides. Hemanvi Vallabhaneni was the leading wicket-taker with 2 for 10 from two overs, while Heet Panchal also claimed a scalp with his tidy 2-0-12-1. Alexander Hatchett-Walker bowled with commendable control, conceding only 5 runs from his two overs.

Despite taking six wickets and restricting the opposition batters to just 64 runs off the bat, the Falcons were undone by their discipline with the ball. The 18-run deficit between the two totals was dwarfed by the 39-run difference in extras conceded — Sonning giving away 65 compared to the 26 they received. It was a harsh lesson for the young Falcons side: in pairs cricket, every wide and no-ball counts.
