Sonning Fall Agonisingly Short as Zahid's Heroics Go in Vain

Sonning 1st XI came within touching distance of what would have been a remarkable run chase at King George's Field, ultimately falling just seven runs short as High Wycombe held their nerve to clinch a tense Division 1B encounter on 22nd August.

Captain Peter Higginbottom won the toss and inserted High Wycombe on a surface that offered early encouragement for his seamers. Damario Goodman justified the decision immediately, removing opener Ajaykrishna Harikrishnan for just 1 with the score on 5, before Mohammed Zahid bowled captain S Parry for 14 to leave the visitors wobbling at 28 for 2. What followed, however, was a masterclass in rebuilding. Rohan Shukla and Shane Wijeyasinghe combined for a monumental third-wicket partnership of 162 runs that shifted the momentum entirely. Shukla ground out a patient 75 from 129 balls, anchoring the innings with ten boundaries, while Wijeyasinghe matched his partner's score of 75 from 96 deliveries in a more aggressive fashion, striking nine fours and a six.

Goodman returned to break the stand and trigger a mini-collapse, dismissing Wijeyasinghe — caught by Danyal Ghazi — before bowling H W P Lane and trapping Kashif Sheikh lbw for a duck to finish with outstanding figures of 4-17 from his ten overs, including two maidens. Zahid chipped in with 2-45 from his full allocation. A late cameo from S D Coker (14 off 10) and J C Holmes (10 off 3, including a six) pushed High Wycombe to a competitive 246 for 7, though Sonning would have been satisfied to have restricted them after the Shukla-Wijeyasinghe onslaught.

The chase began solidly as Alex Mcloughlin and Dhruv Peshkar put on 27 for the first wicket before Peshkar fell for 7, caught off Max Coker. Mcloughlin continued to bat with composure, adding 31 with Robert Jones for the second wicket and then 55 with Muhammad Ayub for the third. Mcloughlin's 45 from 74 balls, laced with six fours, provided the foundation Sonning needed, and when Ayub contributed a fluent 35 from 40 deliveries, the hosts were well placed at 113 for 3.

Then S D Coker turned the match on its head. The High Wycombe seamer ripped through the Sonning middle order with a devastating five-wicket haul, finishing with 5-38 from his ten overs. He accounted for Mcloughlin, Ayub, Duncan Parr, Shenul Widanapathirana and Max Murphy in quick succession, and when Sonning slipped from 113 for 3 to 140 for 6, the target suddenly looked distant.

Enter Mohammed Zahid, who produced an innings of genuine quality under enormous pressure. Coming in at number five with wickets tumbling around him, Zahid counter-attacked brilliantly, smashing 61 from just 54 balls with seven fours and a six. He found useful support from Murphy (14 off 26) in a partnership of 34 for the seventh wicket, and then added 32 with skipper Higginbottom (11 off 20) for the eighth. Zahid's dismissal — caught by S Parry off Shane Wijeyasinghe — at 225 for 9 left Sonning needing 22 from the remaining overs with just the last pair at the crease.

Danyal Ghazi gave the home supporters hope with an explosive unbeaten 20 from 12 balls, including two fours and a six, and Goodman added an unbeaten 4, but time and overs ran out as Sonning finished on 240 for 9 — just seven runs adrift of their target. Despite the defeat, Sonning collected 12 bonus points from the match, with 8 batting and 4 bowling points offering some consolation after what was a valiant effort across all departments.
