Match Report

Akula's 41 Not Enough as Scorchers Fall to Henley at King George's Field

Sonning U15 Scorchers suffered defeat at home to Henley in the U15 Performance League Pool 4 on 6th May, posting 97 for 5 from their 16 overs before the visitors chased down the target with eight wickets in hand.

Captain Tom Wolfenden won the toss and elected to bat on a King George's Field surface that offered something for both sides. The Scorchers' innings was built around a superb knock from Kishan Akula, who struck 41 including six boundaries before being caught off the bowling of Rosie Mills. Opening alongside him, wicketkeeper Kanishka Suriarachchi played an enterprising hand of 24, finding the boundary twice and clearing the rope once, before being trapped lbw by Jethro Kock.

The pair gave the Scorchers a strong platform, but once both were dismissed the middle order struggled to capitalise. Arnav Duvvuri fell cheaply for 3, bowled by Louis Ball, and Jack Durrant was run out for 5 as the innings began to stall. Marcus Hawkins contributed just 2 before being bowled, and it was left to Wolfenden (8 not out) and Neel Kumar (6 not out) to shepherd the total past 90. Henley used nine bowlers, with Joseph Raymond (2-0-9-1), Rosie Mills (2-0-9-1), and Palash Mehta (1-0-3-1) each claiming a wicket, while Taimoor-Ali Baig was the most economical with figures of 2-0-7-0.

In reply, Henley's chase was dominated by opener Jethro Kock, who produced a commanding innings of 57. Kock took particular toll on the Scorchers' attack, punishing anything loose as the visitors raced towards the target. At the other end, captain Joseph Raymond retired out without scoring, but this did little to slow Henley's momentum.

Noah Perrone chipped in with 11 before being trapped lbw by Reyansh Setia, who was the Scorchers' most effective bowler with figures of 2-0-16-1. Eshan Wang-Kumar eventually removed the dangerous Kock, bowling him for 57 to finish with tidy figures of 1-0-2-1, but by then the damage was well and truly done.

The Scorchers' bowling was undermined by extras, which totalled 23 — including 18 wides. Edward Jones was the chief culprit, conceding eight wides in his two overs which went for 25 runs. Wolfenden was the most disciplined with the ball, conceding just 4 runs from his two overs, while Kishan Akula was similarly tight with 4 from one over, but there were not enough breakthroughs to put the visitors under sustained pressure.

Taimoor-Ali Baig (6 not out) and Jackson McDavid (1 not out) saw Henley home, reaching 98 for 2 to secure the victory. For the Scorchers, Akula's batting and the bowling performances of Wolfenden and Wang-Kumar were the standout contributions, but the side will know that a more disciplined effort with the ball — and greater consistency through the middle order — is needed if they are to compete in this league.
