Match Report

Rita Green's Explosive 39 Powers Sonning Women to Victory at Finchampstead

Sonning Women's 1st XI travelled to Finchampstead Park on 17th May and delivered a commanding performance in their Super 8 Development Group 4 fixture, posting 116-1 from their 16 overs before restricting the hosts to 96-3 to secure a well-deserved victory.

Captain Katie Barrows won the toss and elected to bat on what proved to be a good decision. Opener Sophie Parker got the innings off to a brisk start, striking 12 from 13 balls with two boundaries before the batting order rotated through in the pairs format. Barrows herself managed just 2 from 10 deliveries, while Rits Rana (4 off 13) and Sarah Wonham (3 off 11) found run-scoring difficult against the Finchampstead attack.

The innings was transformed by a stunning contribution from Rita Green, who smashed an unbeaten 39 from just 17 balls, an innings laced with nine boundaries. Green's assault was particularly savage, finding the rope with remarkable frequency and lifting the scoring rate dramatically in the latter stages. Elinor Longridge (7 off 12) and Kira Knight (8 off 12) had begun to build momentum in the middle overs, but it was Green who truly took the game away from the hosts. Grace Phillips chipped in with a useful 6 from 7 balls to round off the innings. Extras also played a significant role, with 35 runs coming from sundries as the Finchampstead bowlers struggled for accuracy, conceding 28 wides across their 16 overs.

Neela Dhanjal was the sole wicket-taker for Finchampstead, finishing with 1-22 from her three overs, though she too was guilty of wayward bowling with eight wides. Prisha Vijaywargiya proved the most economical of the home side's bowlers, conceding just 11 from her three overs.

Chasing 117 to win, Finchampstead captain Melissa Callaway came out with intent, striking 15 from 14 balls including three fours. Charlotte Amor also batted well for her 14 off 11, finding the boundary twice. However, the required run rate proved too steep for the home side to sustain across all their batting pairs.

Kira Knight was the standout performer with the ball for Sonning, returning excellent figures of 2-13 from four overs, comfortably the most economical of the visiting attack. Her two wickets helped ensure Finchampstead never truly threatened the target. Rita Green continued her outstanding afternoon with tidy figures of 0-7 from two overs. Both sides struggled with extras during the bowling innings, with Sonning conceding 36 sundries including 30 wides, though Sophie Parker and Katie Barrows were particularly loose, conceding 11 and 7 wides respectively from their allocations.

Neela Dhanjal hit 11 from 13 balls and Rachel André made 9 from 11 in a late rally for the hosts, but it was too little too late. Finchampstead finished on 96-3, falling 20 runs short of the target as Sonning collected six league points to Finchampstead's one.
