Match Report

Sonning 4th XI Undone by Banerjee's Brilliant Century in Heavy Defeat

Royal Ascot captain Ishaan Banerjee produced a devastating display of batting at Yateley Manor School on Saturday, smashing 126 off just 105 balls to propel his side to a commanding 310 for 7 and condemn Sonning 4th XI to a comprehensive defeat in Division 9C of the Thames Valley Cricket League.

Sonning skipper Arun Raghavendra won the toss and chose to field, but the decision quickly backfired as Banerjee and opening partner Raf Bocchio put on 88 for the first wicket. Bocchio contributed a brisk 28 from 31 balls before Shahbaz Ali bowled him to provide Sonning with an early breakthrough. William Smith fell cheaply for 7, bowled by Syed Adnan, but Banerjee was unperturbed at the other end. He shared a crucial 72-run stand for the third wicket with Deep Mohain (17), who was eventually trapped lbw by Moksha Suriarachchi.

Banerjee continued to dominate the Sonning attack, striking 16 fours and six sixes in a commanding innings. He added a further 66 with Martin Kay before Raghavendra finally had the centurion caught by Adnan with the score on 235. Kay went on to make a useful 32 from 39 balls, while Aizaz Hussain provided late fireworks with an unbeaten 29 off just 11 deliveries, including three sixes, to push the total well beyond 300. In all, Sonning's bowlers conceded 51 extras, including 26 wides and 18 byes, which proved costly. Raghavendra was the pick of the Sonning attack with 2 for 40 from his five overs, while the remaining wickets were shared among five other bowlers.

Facing a daunting target of 311, Sonning lost wicketkeeper Kanishka Suriarachchi for 10, caught off Bocchio with the score on 18. What followed, however, was the most promising passage of the Sonning innings as Dhiren Panchal and Kyle Dellar-Law combined in an excellent second-wicket partnership worth 77 runs. Panchal struck six fours and a six in his 34 from 47 balls, while Dellar-Law was the more aggressive of the pair, racing to 48 from 37 deliveries with eight fours and a six.

The partnership was broken when William Smith bowled Panchal at 95 for 2, and from there the required rate began to spiral. Dellar-Law fell for 48, bowled by Harry Winning, before Raghavendra was trapped lbw by Smith for 6. When Neel Kumar was caught for 2, Sonning had slumped to 113 for 5 and the chase was effectively over.

Shahbaz Ali (16) and Moksha Suriarachchi (11) added 31 for the sixth wicket to offer some resistance, before Alastair Parkes launched a spirited counter-attack lower down the order. Parkes struck five fours and two sixes in a rapid 36 from 26 balls, sharing a 37-run stand with Suriarachchi for the seventh wicket. His dismissal, caught off Harry Meadows, effectively ended any lingering hopes. Winning finished with 3 for 56, Smith took 2 for 40, and Meadows claimed 2 for 28 as Sonning were bowled out for 192 in the 33rd over, with William Travers absent and unable to bat.

The 118-run defeat leaves Sonning with seven bonus points to show for their efforts — three batting and four bowling — but the sheer weight of runs conceded, underpinned by Banerjee's match-defining century and a generous extras tally, proved far too much to overcome.
