Siobhan Davis Stars as Sonning Women Secure Six-Point Victory over Binfield

Sonning Women's 1st XI claimed a hard-fought victory over Binfield in this Super 8 Development Group 2 encounter on 4th June, defending their total of 103 for 4 to restrict the visitors to 97 for 4 from their 16 overs. After losing the toss and being asked to bat, captain Sharon Fleming's side posted a competitive score before holding their nerve with the ball to secure all six league points.

Batting first, Sonning's innings was built on contributions throughout the order, though the standout performer was undoubtedly Siobhan Davis, who struck a superb 24 from just 16 deliveries. Davis was the innings' driving force, cracking four boundaries in an aggressive display that gave the home side crucial momentum in the closing overs. Her late assault proved the difference between the two totals.

Earlier in the innings, Sonning had found the going somewhat difficult. Frances Howson got the side off to a reasonable start with 8 from 10 balls, while Melissa Pengraeve contributed a brisk 9 from 12 deliveries, finding the boundary twice. Captain Fleming anchored the middle overs with a composed 10 from 14 balls, but it was Chloe Bailey's cameo of 8 from 8 balls at number eight that provided useful late runs alongside Davis. Extras played a significant role, with 35 extras — including 16 wides and 12 no-balls — boosting Sonning's total considerably.

Lisa Jones was the pick of the Binfield bowling attack, returning figures of 2 for 27 from her four overs, while captain Monika Nicholls claimed the other wicket, conceding just 2 runs from her single over. However, the visitors struggled with their discipline, conceding extras freely across their other bowlers, with Elizabeth Ullstein (0-16 from 2 overs, including six no-balls) and Frankie Rogers (0-22 from 2 overs) proving particularly expensive.

In reply, Binfield made a spirited attempt at the chase. Manisha Naik and Rajbir Noble both struck 21, with Naik hitting three fours from her 12 balls and Noble finding the boundary four times from 14 deliveries. Their middle-order power gave Sonning real cause for concern, and at various stages the visitors looked capable of overhauling the target.

Zoe Docherty had earlier contributed a useful 15 from 13 balls at the top of the order, while Caroline Reid added 8 from 10 balls lower down. However, the loss of four wickets — crucially including Nicholls for just 3 and Naik after her enterprising knock — meant Binfield could never quite build the sustained partnership needed to get them over the line.

Grace Phillips was the standout bowler for Sonning, returning the best figures of 2 for 16 from her full allocation of four overs. Although she conceded five wides, her two wickets proved decisive in disrupting Binfield's chase at key moments. Frances Howson was tidy with 0 for 15 from three overs, while Siobhan Davis backed up her batting heroics with an economical spell of 0 for 13 from two overs. The six-run margin of victory was tight, but Sonning's all-round team effort ensured they came away with the result their collective performance deserved.
