Match Report

Anilkumar's Brilliant Fifty Steers U15 Scorchers to Comfortable Victory

Sonning U15 Scorchers chased down 122 with eight balls to spare and just two wickets down as they overcame Emmbrook & Bearwood at King George's Field in the BYCL Under 15 T20 Blast on Monday evening.

Emmbrook & Bearwood won the toss and opted to bat, and opener Rohit Kanagavel made the most of first use of the wicket. The right-hander struck seven fours and a six in an outstanding knock of 53 from 39 balls before retiring not out, providing the foundation for his side's innings. He lost early partner Dhruv Purushotham for a duck in the first over, caught by Harrison Lott off Tom Wolfenden, but then put on 56 for the second wicket with Freddie Shine, who contributed a brisk 26 from 22 deliveries including five boundaries.

Captain Theo Auty added 13 before falling to Arthur Parkes, who proved the pick of the Sonning attack. Parkes finished with excellent figures of 2-9 from his three overs, also removing Ben Culham for just 1 to stem the flow of runs through the middle overs. Rayan Chib chipped in with the important wicket of Shine, bowling him for 26, while captain Max Murphy claimed the scalp of Abhay Khehar, caught by Chib, as Emmbrook & Bearwood closed on 121-5.

The target always looked within reach, and Sonning's reply got off to a solid if unspectacular start as Harrison Lott and Sid Anilkumar put on 20 for the first wicket. Lott fell lbw to Max Keep for 10, but that only brought Murphy to the crease to join Anilkumar in what proved to be the match-defining partnership.

The pair added a magnificent 96 for the second wicket, taking the game away from the visitors with a blend of controlled accumulation and well-timed boundaries. Anilkumar was the dominant partner, reaching a superb half-century off 40 balls, his innings adorned with four fours and a six before he retired not out on 50. It was a mature knock of real quality from the young batter, who paced his innings perfectly against a varied Emmbrook attack.

Murphy anchored the other end with a composed unbeaten 34 from 40 balls, finding the boundary twice and rotating the strike intelligently throughout. When Neil Jasti fell for 12, caught by Oliver Holmes off Harry Bellman, Sonning still needed only a handful of runs with plenty of overs remaining. Rayan Chib smashed his first delivery for four to seal the win at 122-2 in the 19th over.

The bowling attack had set up the victory nicely, with eight Sonning bowlers sharing the workload. Ethan Towner's tidy spell of 0-14 from three overs and Parkes's match-best 2-9 ensured the target never grew beyond manageable proportions, giving the batters a platform to chase with confidence and composure throughout.
