Match Report

Sonning Women Cruise to Comfortable Victory at Crowthorne

Sonning Women's 1st XI secured a convincing win away at Crowthorne & Crown Wood in their Super 8 Development Group D fixture on 1st May, chasing down a modest target of 41 with considerable ease to finish on 67 for 1 from their 16 overs.

Captain Sharon Fleming won the toss and elected to field first, a decision that proved fully justified as Sonning's bowlers kept the home side under constant pressure. Crowthorne & Crown Wood could manage only 41 for 4 from their 16 overs, with no batter able to build a meaningful score. Gill O'Loughlin and Marsha Connolly top-scored with just 5 apiece, while extras — totalling 16, including 14 wides — proved the most productive contributor to the home side's total.

Frances Howson led the way with the ball for Sonning, returning tidy figures of 1 for 5 from her three overs and setting the tone from the outset. Chloe Bailey also chipped in with 1 for 7 from three overs, while Grace Phillips bowled a disciplined spell of 3-0-7-0. Elinor Longridge claimed the only maiden of the innings in her two-over spell, though she conceded eight runs.

The Sonning reply was dominated by opener Siobhan Davis, who struck a confident 13 from just 13 balls, including three boundaries, to give the visitors early momentum. Although Davis was the only Sonning batter dismissed, the damage had already been done by that point as extras continued to flow freely from the Crowthorne attack.

Fleming contributed a brisk 9 from 8 deliveries, finding the boundary twice, while Elinor Longridge added a useful 6 from 9 balls and Melissa Pengraeve struck one four in her knock of 5. Contributions came from across the order, ensuring Sonning were never in any difficulty during the chase.

The Crowthorne bowling attack struggled badly for accuracy, conceding 27 extras in Sonning's innings — a remarkable 26 of which came from wides. Marsha Connolly and Louise Roberts were particularly wayward, each conceding eight wides in their two-over spells. The sole bright spot for the hosts was Lily Mansfield, who bowled superbly to return figures of 4-3-1-1, claiming Sonning's only wicket while conceding just a single run off the bat.

Sonning's comfortable victory, reaching their target with minimal fuss, earned them six league points compared to Crowthorne's solitary point, giving Fleming's side an excellent start to their campaign.
