Spartans Fall Short as Cookham Dean Overpower Sonning at Odney Club

Sonning U11 Spartans travelled to the Odney Club on 12 August for a BYCL Under 11 Challenge (Tier 1) Central fixture against Cookham Dean's Under 11 Cobras. Captain Isabella Partridge won the toss and elected to bat, but the Spartans were unable to post a competitive enough total, ultimately falling to a 65-run defeat in this pairs format contest.

Batting first, Sonning managed 90 for 6 from their 16 overs, with extras contributing a significant 39 runs to the total. Mia Ho top-scored with 12 from 20 balls, striking two boundaries during a patient innings that anchored the middle overs. Megan Symes provided an enterprising start at the top of the order, hitting 11 off 13 deliveries including two fours, while Inara Ahmed added a useful 9 from 14 balls with a pair of boundaries lower down. Partridge contributed 7 from 11 balls, but too many batters were unable to convert starts, with Reeva Desai (2), Haaniyah Ahmed (2) and Jenu Babu (3) all falling cheaply.

Cookham Dean's bowlers shared the wickets around effectively. Captain Ed Hughes was the standout performer with the ball, returning figures of 2 for 6 from his two overs, including a maiden — the only one bowled in the match. James Neville also claimed 2 for 10, while Ermis Karakousis (1-7) and Jacob Otto (1-10) chipped in with a wicket apiece. The hosts' attack was not without its own difficulties, however, conceding 25 wides and 10 no-balls across the innings.

Chasing 91 for victory, Cookham Dean's batting lineup proved far too strong, racing to 155 for 7 from their 16 overs. Felix Noble led the way with a sparkling 20 off just 12 balls, cracking four fours in an innings that put the Spartans' attack to the sword. Hughes backed up his bowling effort with a destructive 19 from 12 deliveries, launching two sixes and hitting a four in a display of clean striking.

Ermis Karakousis continued his fine all-round match with 15 off 13 balls featuring three fours, while Jack Connell (14 off 15) and Jacob Otto (14 off 15, including a six) both batted with fluency. Henry Rees struck 11 from 11 balls at the top of the order, ensuring the home side got off to a brisk start, and James Neville added 7 not out.

The Spartans' bowling unit found conditions difficult, conceding 50 extras — 24 wides and 14 no-balls among them. Reeva Desai produced the most economical spell of the innings, taking 2 for 7 from her two overs with no wides, an impressive display of accuracy. Megan Symes also claimed two wickets, finishing with 2 for 17, while Inara Ahmed picked up 1 for 12. However, several bowlers were punished heavily, with Natalie De Boiserie (0-28 from two overs) and Jenu Babu (0-23 from two overs, including eight no-balls) coming in for particular attention.

It was a chastening afternoon for the Spartans, who despite showing glimpses of ability with the bat — particularly through Ho, Symes and Inara Ahmed — were ultimately outclassed by a Cookham Dean side that batted with authority from top to bottom. Desai's tidy spell with the ball was a clear positive, demonstrating the control that the rest of the attack will need to find consistently at this level.
