Stingers Soft Ball Fall Short as West Ilsley Claim Victory at Home

Sonning Stingers Soft Ball travelled to West Ilsley CC on 12 June 2021 for a Berkshire Women's Soft Ball – West league fixture but were unable to chase down the home side's total, falling 15 runs short in a disappointing afternoon for the visitors.

West Ilsley, captained by Clare Robinson, batted first and posted a total of 64 runs from their innings, losing six wickets along the way. Philipa Saich led the charge at the top of the order with a team-high 18 runs, providing a solid foundation for the home side. Francesca Wilson contributed a useful 14, while Laura Gillespie and Kate Storrar each added 11 to keep the scoreboard ticking over. The Stingers' bowling attack did well to claim six wickets, with Storrar dismissed twice and Nicole Allen also falling on two occasions, but the home side's batting was spread across the card with all eight players getting amongst the runs.

Sophie Hyndman chipped in with 9 and Allen made 8, ensuring that West Ilsley's total, bolstered by 16 extras, was a competitive one. The Stingers would have been relatively pleased with their work in the field, having restricted the scoring across the order, but the challenge of chasing 65 to win proved beyond them.

In reply, the Stingers could only manage 49 runs despite losing just three wickets. The individual batting performances for Sonning were not recorded in the scorecard, making it difficult to pinpoint where the innings stalled, but the total tells its own story. Extras accounted for 24 of the Stingers' 49 runs — nearly half the total — with 18 wides and 4 byes suggesting that the West Ilsley bowling, while occasionally wayward, ultimately did enough to keep the visiting batters in check.

Laura Gillespie was the standout performer with the ball for West Ilsley, returning figures of 2 wickets for 7 runs from her 2 overs — comfortably the best bowling analysis of the match. Francesca Wilson also struck, claiming 1 for 13 from her 2 overs. Sophie Hyndman was miserly in the extreme, conceding just a single run from her over, while Nicole Allen matched that economy, going for only 1 run from her solitary over.

Captain Clare Robinson kept things tight with figures of 0 for 4 from 2 overs, and Philipa Saich was equally disciplined with 0 for 6 from her 2-over spell. The collective effort from eight different bowlers meant the Stingers never gained any real momentum in their chase, with the variety of bowling keeping the visitors guessing throughout.

The result gave West Ilsley a deserved 3 league points, while the Stingers returned to Sonning empty-handed. For the visitors, the inability to convert a relatively modest target, particularly when only three wickets fell, will be a source of frustration. The reliance on extras for nearly half their total underlined a batting display that lacked the necessary intent to overhaul the home side's score.
