Match Report
Sharks Fall Short at Holyport Despite Idris Malik's Four-Wicket Haul
Sonning U11 Sharks travelled to Holyport CC on 30 April for a U11 T16 Pairs North East league fixture and, having won the toss and elected to field, were ultimately unable to chase down the home side's total, falling 14 runs short in a match where extras played a decisive role for both teams.
Holyport batted first and were immediately put under pressure by captain Idris Malik, who produced a magnificent opening spell of 2-0-4-4. His four wickets for just four runs set the tone early, restricting the home side's top order and giving the Sharks a platform to build on in the field. The early breakthroughs left Holyport searching for momentum through their first few pairs.
The home side's middle and lower order, however, fought back strongly. Luca Miles was the standout performer with the bat, striking an unbeaten 20 from 16 balls, including two fours and a six. Nathaniel Denholm contributed a brisk 17 off 12 deliveries with two boundaries, while captain Benjamin Hinkel added a useful 12 from 16 balls. Harry Rusher chipped in with 10, and together these contributions helped Holyport recover from their difficult start.
The Sharks' bowling became costly in the later overs. Owen Simmons conceded 25 runs from his two overs, including eight no-balls, while Logan Powell went for 16. Extras proved a significant factor in the first innings, with 47 added to Holyport's total — 33 of those from wides alone. Lewis Flanigan and Yusuf Malik each claimed a wicket apiece, while Muhammad Shah bowled tidily, taking 1-8 from his two overs including a maiden.
Chasing 120 for victory, the Sharks found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Holyport attack. Openers Ishan Jithendriya and Elias Haidari managed just four runs between them from 24 balls, and the early pairs struggled to find the boundary. Lewis Flanigan and Jamie Dollinger each contributed five, but wickets fell at regular intervals, with the Sharks losing eight dismissals across their innings.
Ibrahim Ali Mir provided the brightest moment of the Sharks' reply, striking a defiant 14 from just 10 balls, including a fine six, to inject some late urgency. Yusuf Malik and Idris Malik each added seven in the final pair, but by then the required rate had climbed beyond reach. Luca Miles was the chief tormentor with the ball for Holyport, claiming 3-9 from three overs with a maiden, while Bobby Hart and Nathaniel Denholm took a wicket each.
As in the first innings, extras were plentiful — 56 in the Sonning innings, with 38 wides and 14 no-balls — yet even this generous helping of additional runs was not enough. The Sharks finished on 105 from their 20 overs, handing Holyport a deserved victory. For Sonning, Idris Malik's outstanding 4-4 with the ball stood out as the performance of the match, offering considerable encouragement despite the defeat.
