Match Report

Widanapathirana's Classy 65 Steers Sonning 3rd XI to Comeback Victory Against Eversley

Sonning 3rd XI produced a superb run chase at Knowl Hill, recovering from the early loss of two wickets for just three runs to overhaul Eversley's total of 206 all out with nearly five overs to spare in this Division 7A encounter. Shamitha Widanapathirana was the architect of the successful pursuit, compiling a patient yet authoritative 65 from 84 balls, laced with ten boundaries.

Eversley, having won the toss and elected to bat, made a solid start through openers Vijay Nawale and Neil Devanand, who put on 60 for the first wicket. Nawale was the more fluent of the two, striking six fours and a six in his knock of 37 from 54 deliveries before being run out with the score on 76. Devanand contributed a steady 16 before falling caught off the bowling of Reyansh Setia.

The middle order failed to capitalise on the platform, with Julian Cummings managing just five and Atharva Hadap eight as Sonning's bowlers tightened their grip. Muhammad Aziz showed some resolve with 24 before being trapped lbw by Indeveer Sahota, but when three wickets fell in quick succession — the score slipping from 105 for four to 110 for six — Eversley appeared in danger of being bundled out cheaply.

Sabya Sen had other ideas, launching a ferocious counterattack that transformed the innings. His blistering 48 from just 22 balls included five sixes and three fours, and a partnership of 68 with Elay Sen for the seventh wicket hauled the total to a competitive 206. Indeveer Sahota was the pick of the Sonning attack with three for 29 from his nine overs, while Setia claimed two for 31 and Tom Wolfenden chipped in with two for 37.

The Sonning reply began disastrously. Harrison Lott was trapped lbw by Elay Sen for a golden duck from the second ball of the innings, and Aseem Shafi followed moments later, bowled by the same bowler for two, leaving Sonning reeling at three for two. Elay Sen's opening spell of three for 28 threatened to derail the chase before it had begun.

Paul Towner and Widanapathirana then combined for the match-defining partnership. The pair added 85 for the third wicket, rebuilding with composure and gradually wresting control away from Eversley's attack. Towner was the more aggressive early on, striking three fours and a six in his 37 from 49 balls before being caught by Nawale off Graeme Ellis with the score on 88. Widanapathirana continued in assured fashion, threading boundaries through the offside and anchoring a further stand of 54 with captain Arun Kumar Pera, who contributed a brisk 28 from 31 balls featuring three fours and a six.

When Widanapathirana was eventually bowled by Atharva Hadap for 65 at 142 for four, the required rate was manageable but wickets continued to fall at inconvenient intervals. Akash Udayan provided useful impetus with 24 from 31 balls, and Ravi Kumar added 11 in a sixth-wicket partnership of 34 that kept Sonning well ahead of the asking rate. At 203 for eight, with still seven runs needed, there was a flicker of tension.

Tom Wolfenden extinguished any lingering doubt with a cameo of 16 not out from just nine balls, crashing two fours and a six to carry Sonning home to 209 for eight in 40.1 overs. It was a victory built on the platform laid by Widanapathirana and Towner, supported by contributions throughout the middle order, ensuring Sonning collected the full 22 league points on offer.
