Eagles Fall Short as Finchampstead Claim Victory at King George's Field

Sonning U9 Eagles suffered a 26-run defeat to Finchampstead in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league fixture at King George's Field on Sunday, despite a spirited bowling display that kept the visitors in check for large parts of the first innings.

Captain Ahmad Naqash won the toss and elected to field, a decision that initially appeared shrewd as Sonning's bowlers made early inroads. Siddhartha Yanamadala produced the most miserly spell of the match, conceding just two runs from his two overs and bowling a maiden — a remarkable achievement at this age group. Felix Teed was equally impressive, taking a wicket while giving away only six runs from his two overs, keeping the Finchampstead batters firmly on the back foot during his spell.

Naqash led from the front with the ball, claiming the best figures of the innings with 2-17 from his two overs. Wickets were shared across the attack, with Younus Ahmed, Vihaan More, Max Chapman, Mackie Theron, Jake Burkinshaw, Aaditya Amrite, and Teed all taking a scalp apiece to claim 11 wickets in total. However, 50 extras — including 32 wides — proved costly as Finchampstead posted 146 from their 20 overs.

Kabir Anand top-scored for the visitors with a fluent 23 from 16 balls, striking five fours in an eye-catching knock. Joseph Lancaster contributed 17 from just 13 deliveries with three boundaries, while captain Ciaran Cilliers added 15 and Vivaan Holani made 14 to ensure Finchampstead built a competitive total despite losing wickets at regular intervals.

Chasing 147 to win, Sonning needed contributions throughout the order but found the Finchampstead bowling attack difficult to score freely against. Chapman was the brightest spark at the top, hitting two fours on his way to 11 from 14 balls, while Siddhartha Yanamadala continued his fine all-round display with the top score of 12 from 12 deliveries, finding the boundary twice in an assured innings.

Vihaan More chipped in with nine, and Aadvik Gonchikar and Younus Ahmed both made starts with eight and seven respectively, but no Sonning batter was able to convert into a truly match-changing contribution. The Eagles lost 12 wickets across the innings, with the five-run dismissal penalties proving decisive in the final reckoning.

Joseph Lancaster was the standout with the ball for Finchampstead, taking 3-9 from two overs, while Cilliers matched him with 3-11 from three overs and Kabir Anand completed an impressive double with 3-12 from his three-over spell. Sonning managed 120 all told, with 51 extras keeping them in the contest but ultimately falling short by 26 runs. Despite the defeat, there were plenty of encouraging individual performances for the Eagles to build upon, particularly Yanamadala's outstanding all-round contribution and Chapman's composed batting display.
