Scorchers Fall Agonisingly Short as Wokingham Edge T20 Thriller by a Single Run

Sonning U17 Scorchers suffered the cruellest of defeats at Wokingham Cricket Club on Tuesday evening, falling just one run short of their target in a BYCL Under 17 T20 Blast encounter that went down to the final ball. Chasing 137 to win, the Scorchers were bowled out for 135 off the last delivery of the innings, handing Wokingham a narrow and hard-fought victory.

Captain Robert Jones won the toss and elected to field, but his bowlers were hampered throughout by a lack of discipline with the white ball. A total of 36 wides in the Wokingham innings — including 13 from Ollie Terry alone — gifted the home side nearly two runs per over before the bat even made contact. Extras of 39 constituted more than a quarter of Wokingham's total of 136 for 3, underlining how costly the wayward bowling proved.

Aashmit Ghosh was the pick of the Scorchers' attack, returning tidy figures of 1 for 19 from his four overs. He claimed the important wicket of Yajat Kothari, who had compiled a patient 25 from 35 balls, caught by skipper Jones. Ethan Towner also contributed with the ball, clean bowling Noah Butler-Willis for 6 to break the opening stand at 26. Terry, despite his problems with wides, picked up Thomas Williams, caught by Moksha Suriarachchi, but by then the damage had been done.

Algie Nottingham was the anchor of the Wokingham innings, carrying his bat for an unbeaten 41 from 44 deliveries, striking three fours in a composed knock. He shared a crucial 50-run partnership with Kothari for the second wicket that provided the foundation. Captain Sivapranan Prakash then added impetus with a brisk unbeaten 19 from 18 balls, laced with three boundaries, as the home side posted what appeared a modest but ultimately sufficient total.

The Scorchers' reply began poorly when Sid Anilkumar was caught behind by Nottingham off Micah Doughty for just 3. However, wicketkeeper Abhiveer Rawat and Jones steadied the ship with a 32-run stand for the second wicket, the best partnership of the innings. Rawat contributed 12 from 20 balls before being run out, and Jones looked the most fluent of the top order with 14 from 19 balls, including a boundary, before falling caught off Tristan Soza.

The middle order struggled to build momentum against disciplined Wokingham bowling, though the hosts were equally loose with their extras — 55 in total, including 48 wides. Moksha Suriarachchi offered a spark with 14 from 15 balls, hitting two fours, before being snaffled by Butler-Willis off Doughty. When Ethan Towner was bowled by Soza for 4, the Scorchers had slumped to 111 for 8 and appeared well beaten.

What followed was a remarkable ninth-wicket partnership of 23 between Jack Durrant and Qasim Anwar that hauled Sonning back into contention. Durrant blazed 9 from just 4 balls, crashing two fours in a cameo that transformed the equation, before being run out with the scores agonisingly close. Anwar batted with admirable composure for his unbeaten 9 from 12 balls, but when last man Kanishka Suriarachchi was run out for 1 off the final ball with the total on 135, Wokingham could celebrate a one-run victory that the Scorchers will feel they let slip through their fingers.
