Match Report

U9 Eagles Soar to Comfortable Victory Over Reading Tigers

Sonning U9 Eagles posted a commanding total of 117 from their 16 overs before restricting Reading Tigers to just 87 in reply, securing a well-deserved victory in the BYCL Under 9 Super 8s North West league fixture at Sonning Lane on 11th August.

After Reading won the toss and elected to field, the Eagles set about building a strong platform. Ridith Kandadi was the standout performer with the bat, striking a fluent 18 off just 12 balls, including three boundaries that punctuated an aggressive innings. Sai Sathvik Cherukuri provided early impetus at the top of the order, smashing 15 off 12 deliveries with a four and a six — the only maximum of the match — to get the scoreboard moving quickly.

The middle and lower order continued to chip in with useful contributions. Oscar Williams compiled a steady 12 off 16 balls, while Jonathan Turner added 11 off 13 with a boundary of his own. Svarup Huggi (7 off 13) and captain Oliver Baker (5 off 9) ensured that virtually every Eagles batter made a contribution to the team's total. Extras also played a significant role, with 43 coming from the Reading bowling attack, which struggled for accuracy throughout.

Reading's bowlers found it difficult to contain the Sonning batters. Rajveer Beniwal bore the brunt of the assault, conceding 27 from his two overs, while Adhvik Kothai Sriram leaked 18 runs from two overs including seven wides and four no-balls. Cyril Voltaire was the most economical of Reading's attack, returning tidy figures of 2-0-9-1, while captain Kiyaan Gupta picked up a wicket in his three overs.

In reply, Reading's chase never truly got off the ground. Cyril Voltaire managed just 2 off 18 balls at the top of the order, and the Tigers found scoring consistently difficult against disciplined Eagles bowling. Reyansh Katuri was the lone bright spot for the home side, top-scoring with 12 off 13 balls including a boundary, but he lacked support from his teammates.

Oscar Williams produced a superb spell with the ball for Sonning, returning outstanding figures of 2-1-1-1, including a maiden over — a remarkable achievement at this age group. Ridith Kandadi backed up his batting exploits with a wicket of his own, while Jacob Garner also chipped in with a scalp from his two overs. The Eagles' bowling was not without its loose deliveries, conceding 59 extras in total, but the target always looked well beyond Reading's reach.

With only 29 runs scored off the bat in the entire second innings, Reading's batters were unable to build any momentum. Adhvik Kothai Sriram contributed 5 off 11 balls and Kiyaan Gupta made 3 off 11, but too many of the Tigers' batters were dismissed cheaply. The 30-run victory margin reflected Sonning's superiority across all departments, with the Eagles earning a valuable two league points from a thoroughly professional performance.
