Match Report
Sabres Undone by Datchet's Middle-Order Power at Knowl Hill
Sonning U15 Sabres suffered a comprehensive defeat at Knowl Hill on Friday evening as Datchet posted 164 for 5 from their 20 overs and then bowled the hosts out for 93 in reply in this BYCL Under 15 T20 Challenge East fixture.
Captain Christopher Dowse won the toss and chose to field first, but the decision offered little early reward as Datchet opener Saifan Chaudhry struck four boundaries in a blistering 17 off just nine balls before being run out by Toby Whitehead. Nathan Salisbury provided the Sabres with a glimmer of hope, bowling Milan Malindi for 7 and then having skipper Shane Athukorala caught behind by Ollie Terry for a duck to leave Datchet 30 for 3.
From that promising position, however, the match slipped away from Sonning. Thomas Radford and Ben Petri-Woods took the Datchet innings to another level, with Radford striking 30 off 22 balls including four fours and a six before retiring, and Petri-Woods smashing a devastating 32 off just 13 deliveries, clearing the boundary three times alongside three fours, before he too retired not out. Their impetus transformed the innings entirely.
Harshil Sharma and Ehsan Ahmed then combined for a remarkable century stand for the fourth wicket, adding 100 runs together. Ahmed was particularly fluent, striking 27 off 23 balls with four boundaries before Whitehead effected another run out. Dowse eventually broke through with his off-spin, stumping Sharma for 19 via the gloves of Terry, while Rajveer Sidhu contributed an unbeaten 13 as Datchet finished on an imposing total. Salisbury's figures of 2 for 13 from three overs and Dowse's economical 1 for 6 from two were the standout bowling efforts, but the Sabres used ten bowlers and leaked 19 extras, including 13 wides.
The Sonning reply was in immediate trouble. Milan Malindi produced a devastating opening spell, bowling Whitehead for a duck with the second ball of the innings and then removing Shreyas Koppole, caught and bowled, without scoring. At 0 for 2, the chase was effectively over before it had begun. Darshil Saxena counter-attacked briefly with a six in his 6 off seven balls, but when Malindi bowled him to complete superb figures of 3 for 16 from three overs — including a maiden — Sonning were reeling at 11 for 3.
Ollie Terry offered the most significant resistance, striking three fours and a six in an enterprising 21 off 20 balls. He and Dowse added 20 for the fourth wicket to provide a brief period of consolidation, but once both fell — Dowse caught by Sidhu off Tanbir Sahota for 6, and Terry caught by Findlay McVay — the lower order was exposed. McVay proved particularly effective with his three wickets for 13, including a maiden, while Sahota chipped in with 2 for 18.
Aravindth Satheeskumar showed admirable determination lower down the order, batting through much of the second half of the innings for 16 off 31 balls with two boundaries. He and Nathan Salisbury put on 15 for the ninth wicket before Salisbury was caught by Thomas Radford for 7. Satheeskumar was eventually run out by Ben Petri-Woods to end the innings at 93 all out in the 20th over, handing Datchet a convincing 71-run victory.
It was a chastening evening for the Sabres, who struggled to contain Datchet's aggressive batting in the first innings and were unable to build any sustained partnerships in reply. The 24 extras in their own innings, while generous from the Datchet bowlers, could not compensate for a top order that managed just 6 runs between three batsmen.
