Match Report

Sonning's 305 Not Enough as Hillingdon Manor Bat Out the Draw

Sonning 2nd XI posted an imposing 305 for 6 from their 52 overs at King George's Field but were ultimately frustrated as Hillingdon Manor closed on 231 for 4, comfortably seeing out the remaining overs to secure a draw in this Division 4B encounter.

Captain Dan Anderson won the toss and elected to bat, though the decision did not yield immediate dividends. Duncan Parr fell lbw to Harppal Singh for just 4, and when Gaurav Jayan was caught by Ryan Aujla off the same bowler for a brisk 33 from 37 balls, Sonning found themselves 42 for 2 with work to do.

What followed was the pivotal passage of the Sonning innings. Anderson and Robert Jones combined for a magnificent third-wicket partnership of 128, wresting control from the Hillingdon Manor attack. Anderson compiled a patient half-century from 74 deliveries, striking eight fours before falling lbw to opposition captain Joshua Frost for exactly 50. Jones continued to anchor the innings with increasing authority, finding the boundary twelve times during a superb knock of 93 from 102 balls. His dismissal — caught by Rob Alexander off Frost — came with the score on 245, having been the backbone of the batting effort across three productive partnerships.

The late acceleration came from wicketkeeper Henry Cook, who produced a devastating cameo of 61 not out from just 40 balls, clearing the rope twice and striking seven fours. Edward McLoughlin provided excellent support with an unbeaten 25 from 18 deliveries, including two sixes of his own, as the pair added 60 unbroken for the seventh wicket to propel Sonning beyond 300. Frost was the pick of the Hillingdon Manor bowlers with 3 for 88 from his 13 overs, while Harppal Singh claimed 2 for 61.

Chasing 306 to win, Hillingdon Manor suffered an early wobble as Ghulam Abbas struck twice in his opening spell. Henry Cook held both catches behind the stumps as Rob Alexander departed for 7 and Rohanvir Sidhu followed shortly after for 5, leaving the visitors reeling at 12 for 2.

Harppal Singh, having earlier taken two wickets with the ball, transformed the reply with a counter-attacking 81 from 95 balls, lacing 13 fours and a six. He added 74 for the third wicket with Harpreet Singh before the latter was caught by Cook off Max Murphy for 6. Singh and Ryan Aujla then put on 76 for the fourth wicket, taking the chase to 162 before Singh fell lbw to Duncan Parr. By that stage, the target was effectively out of reach given the required rate, but Hillingdon Manor had no intention of folding.

Aujla remained unbeaten on 64 from 83 balls, anchoring the remaining overs alongside Hamid Noormohamed, who contributed a watchful 28 not out from 55 deliveries. Despite Anderson employing eight different bowlers in search of breakthroughs, the visiting pair's unbroken stand ensured the match petered out into a draw, with Hillingdon Manor finishing 75 runs short but with six wickets in hand. Sonning collected 11 points to Hillingdon Manor's 10 — a result that will leave Anderson's side wondering what might have been had they managed to strike more regularly in the second half of the opposition innings.
