Wolfenden's Defiant 36 Not Enough as U17 Scorchers Fall to Kidmore End

Sonning U17 Scorchers posted 144 for 9 from their 20 overs after winning the toss and electing to bat in this BYCL Under 17 T20 Blast West fixture, but Kidmore End captain Sanay Sadhwani's commanding half-century steered the hosts to victory with eight balls to spare.

The Scorchers' innings began unsteadily, with opener Abhiveer Rawat falling for just 1 off 11 balls, bowled by Jibran Ahmed, before Kavya Panchal was dismissed for a duck two balls into his innings, clean bowled by Barney Broadhurst. At 19 for 2, Sonning were in early trouble, and when Sid Anilkumar was caught off Broadhurst for 11, the visitors had slipped to 30 for 3.

A crucial fourth-wicket partnership of 46 between Max Murphy (15 off 23 balls) and Elliot Dawes steadied the innings and took the score to 76 before Sadhwani had Murphy bowled. Dawes continued to strike the ball cleanly, hitting four boundaries in his 22 off 23 deliveries, but Sadhwani claimed his scalp too, leaving the Scorchers 85 for 6 and in need of a rescue act.

Jack Wolfenden duly provided it. The right-hander arrived at the crease and played the innings of the match, striking six fours in an unbeaten 36 off 30 balls. He added 24 with Moksha Suriarachchi for the seventh wicket and a further 24 with skipper Ethan Towner for the eighth, driving the total past the 130 mark. Christopher Dowse chipped in with a brisk 5 off 3 balls before being run out, and the Scorchers finished on 144 for 9 — a total bolstered significantly by 46 extras, including 24 wides from a wayward Kidmore End attack.

Sadhwani was the pick of the home bowlers, returning excellent figures of 3 for 16 from his four overs. Ahmed was equally miserly, taking 2 for 15 with a maiden over in his spell, while Broadhurst claimed 2 for 24 despite conceding 12 wides.

The Kidmore End reply was built on two outstanding partnerships. Dhruv Peshkar (19 off 17 balls) and Sadhwani put on 45 for the first wicket at a brisk rate, with Peshkar hitting three boundaries before being caught by Suriarachchi off Towner's bowling. Freddie Syms then joined his captain and the pair produced a match-winning stand of 73 for the second wicket, taking the score to 118 before Syms fell. Sadhwani was imperious throughout, striking six fours and a six in his 52 off 41 balls before retiring not out, while Syms contributed an excellent 42 off 37 balls with five fours.

Towner was Sonning's most effective bowler, claiming 2 for 19 from his four overs, including the key wickets of Peshkar and Aadit Pandey. Murphy bowled tidily for 1 for 25, and Suriarachchi picked up the important scalp of Syms, caught by Anilkumar. However, with the required rate always manageable, Kidmore End reached their target of 145 for the loss of just four wickets in 18.4 overs, leaving the Scorchers to reflect on a defeat in which their lower-order batting recovery ultimately proved insufficient against a disciplined home side.
