Richards Stars with Bat and Ball as Sonning 2nd XI Claim Victory at Wargrave
Sonning 2nd XI travelled to Wargrave Cricket Club on 8th August for a Division 6B encounter and returned home with a comprehensive win, chasing down 178 with six wickets in hand. Mark Richards was the standout performer of the afternoon, delivering a superb all-round display that proved the difference between the two sides.
Wargrave captain Richard Harris won the toss and elected to bat on home soil, and it was Harris himself who provided the backbone of the innings. The skipper compiled an excellent 69, anchoring the Wargrave batting effort as wickets fell around him. Huw Thomas contributed a useful 32 in the middle order, and the pair ensured that Wargrave built a competitive platform after an early wobble.
Sonning's bowling attack worked through the Wargrave lineup with admirable discipline. Indeveer Sahota was the pick of the bowlers, returning remarkable figures of 3 for 13 from his four overs, including the key dismissals of Thomas, Adit Rajeev and Kyle Bradley — the latter two clean bowled. Wicketkeeper Paul Boyle played his part behind the stumps with two stumpings off the bowling of Richards and Sahota respectively. Richards himself claimed 2 for 24 from his eight overs, while Charley Phillips removed the dangerous Harris, caught by Sahota, to finish with 1 for 24. Ella Phillips chipped in with two late wickets to help restrict Wargrave to 177 for 8 from their full allocation of 40 overs.
The Sonning reply was dominated by Richards, who was immense at the top of the order. He and opening partner Gerard Soames set about the chase with intent, putting on a significant stand that laid the foundation for the successful pursuit. Soames played fluently for his 36 before falling caught by James Newton off the bowling of Edward King.
The departure of Soames brought a brief wobble as Louis Dean was bowled by Newton for a duck and Sahota was caught by Pritam Dara off King, also without scoring. At 4 wickets down, Wargrave sensed an opportunity, but Richards remained unmoved at the crease, continuing to accumulate runs with authority.
Richards eventually fell bowled by Newton for a magnificent 87, an innings that had effectively settled the contest. Luke Compton-Burnett, unbeaten on 16, and Paul Boyle, not out on 14, saw Sonning home without further alarm, reaching the target of 179 for 4 in 38.1 overs. The 26 extras conceded by the Wargrave attack, including 10 byes and 16 leg byes, also eased Sonning's passage.
It was a thoroughly deserved victory for Gary Phillips's side, built on the outstanding all-round contribution of Richards and the incisive bowling of Sahota, whose spell in particular broke the back of the Wargrave middle order and ensured the target remained within reach.
