Match Report

U11 Spartans Chase Down Sabres in Intra-Club Friendly at Knowl Hill

Sonning U11 Spartans produced a composed run chase to overhaul the Sabres' total in a pairs format friendly between the club's under-11 sides at Knowl Hill CC on Friday evening, posting 82 in reply to 62.

The Sabres, having won the toss and elected to bat, found run-scoring difficult against a disciplined Spartans bowling attack in the early overs. Aarohi Tyagi set the tone superbly with her three overs, conceding just four runs and claiming a maiden — the most economical spell of the match. Reeva Desai was equally measured at the other end, giving away only nine runs from her three overs as the Sabres' openers struggled to find the boundary with any regularity.

Alexander Green top-scored for the Sabres with 13 off 11 balls, including a four, providing some much-needed impetus in the middle overs. Zain Baloch contributed a steady 10 from 17 deliveries at the top of the order, while Sebastian Cook (7 off 11) and Arthur Teed (9 off 13) offered useful support. Oliver Baker was the standout late in the innings, claiming the only wicket to fall and conceding just five runs from his two overs, helping to restrict the Sabres to 62-1 from their 16 overs. The total included 41 extras, with 35 of those coming from penalty runs.

The Spartans' reply was led with authority by Alexander Hatchett-Walker, who struck a fluent 20 off just 16 balls at the top of the order. His innings, punctuated by three crisp boundaries, set the tempo and ensured the Spartans were always ahead of the required rate.

Oliver Baker backed up his fine bowling with an excellent 15 off 11 balls, including a four, underlining his status as the outstanding all-round performer of the evening. Captain Lewis Towner chipped in with 10 off 13 balls, while Aarohi Tyagi added a handy six from 13 deliveries to keep the scoreboard ticking over.

The Sabres' bowlers worked hard in reply, with Harry Waite and Samuel Edwards each bowling a maiden during their two-over spells. Leo Ribbens picked up a wicket while conceding just seven runs, and Isaac Hutchinson also claimed a scalp, but the Spartans' batters contributed more consistently across the order, with seven of the eight recording runs. Reeva Desai saw the innings out with five from 14 balls, including a boundary, as the Spartans reached 82-7 from their 16 overs.

The 20-run victory was built on a complete team performance from the Spartans, with Hatchett-Walker and Baker the standout contributors with both bat and ball. Baker's match figures of 1-5 with the ball and 15 with the bat made him the decisive influence, while Tyagi's miserly opening spell ensured the target remained manageable throughout.
