Match Report

PACE PAIR Ghulam Abbas and Zulfqar Ali bowled Sonning to another vital victory as they stepped up their challenge to retain the Berkshire Cricket League Premier Division crown.

Abbas has for several years been the most devastating bowler in the league, and he has now been joined at Pound Lane by former Ibis Mapledurham skipper Zulfqar Ali.

And the pair proved too hot for a depleted Pinkneys Green side, who crashed to an eight-wicket defeat.

Abbas took a wicket in his first over, but then Pinkneys’ Jag Dhillon took the attack to Sonning with an array of excellent shots.

He reached 47 before he was bowled by Zulfqar – and after that Pinkneys crumbled.

Abbas took 6-36 and Zulfqar claimed 4-9 off eight overs to leave the East Berks side all out for 96.

With the weather closing in, Sonning were in a hurry with the bat.

They reached 62-1 off eight overs at tea, then, after a delay for rain, they polished off the remaining runs in five more overs.

Latif Gohar did the damage for Sonning, hitting three sixes in an unbeaten 48.

Sonning skipper Gary Phillips said: “The team is really focussed and we are at full strength.

“We got early wickets which set us up for the win, which was just as well as it poured down soon after we had finished.

The win edged Sonning further clear at the top, but there are still four teams in the hunt.

And Phillips said: “Over the last four years we have been competing for the title against just one other team, but this year it has been very interesting with four teams right up there.
